Frank Tsikata, a student affairs master’s student, was just selected for the inaugural cohort of Scholar Development Fellows with the Journal for First-Generation Student Success. The program is a new cohort-based professional development series designed to strengthen participants' scholarly writing and peer review skills while cultivating scholarly excellence among emerging scholars. Through interactive workshops, guided practice and individualized feedback, participants will gain practical experience with the academic peer-review process and scholarly publishing. Congratulations, Frank!

Cameron McHugh, a junior early childhood education major, and Dr. Jill Shelnut presented "Trauma-Informed Play: Hands-On Strategies to Empower Children" at the SCAEYC Fall 2026 Conference. Their presentation explored how early childhood educators can use play and positive relationships to support children who have experienced trauma. Participants learned practical strategies to strengthen connection, promote emotional regulation and respond intentionally to children’s needs through the FOLLOW, NOTICE, REFLECT, MATCH framework. Through hands-on activities and classroom scenarios, Cameron and Shelnut highlighted how educators can create safe, supportive environments where young children feel empowered to connect, explore and play.

Emily Howell serves as an associate professor in the Department of Education and Human Development at Clemson University. Outside of her time spent in the classroom, Howell conducts research on the professional development of literacy educators, particularly those working with multilingual learners. Steph Dean has a strong hunch that when a science teacher sees themselves as equal parts scientist and educator, everyone in a school benefits. Dean is leading faculty researchers from multiple colleges at Clemson University on a project to cultivate more scientist-educators who can build bridges between their classrooms and nature. The team includes faculty from the Clemson University College of Science and the Clemson University's College of Agriculture, Forestry & Life Sciences.

Clemson University's counselor education program hosted the South Carolina Association for Play Therapy's fall conference Sept. 25-26. The event brought together play therapy professionals and current and former Clemson students for professional development, collaboration and experiential learning. Attendees also spent part of the second day at the South Carolina Botanical Garden for hands-on learning opportunities.
