Members of our leadership team were so thrilled to visit with Dr. Marquice Clark, a Call Me MiSTER and Clemson EdD alumnus who has served as principal at Cleveland Academy of Leadership in Spartanburg for several years. Clark was named South Carolina Elementary Principal of the Year in 2025 for the transformative work he has done at the school. We were happy to engage with Dr. Clark to learn his approach to working with staff, students and partners to improve both the school and the surrounding community. The Clemson Teaching Fellows program kicked off a new year by welcoming 25 first-year students at its annual Welcome Dinner! The event brought new and returning fellows together for an evening of good food, games and conversation. Returning fellows helped welcome our newest members into the Clemson Teaching Fellows community while enjoying the chance to reconnect with friends after a summer apart. It was a fun start to the year, and we’re excited for all that’s ahead! Teaching Fellows is a statewide initiative of the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA) designed to recruit and develop talented future educators for South Carolina. Students apply as high school seniors and complete a rigorous selection process before joining a program focused on developing their capacities in leadership and advocacy.

Darris Means, professor of educational leadership and Dean's Fellow for Rural Education, has been named the newest Jackie Bezos Researcher in Residence at the Bezos Foundation. Means will work alongside the foundation's team to shape its research agenda, help identify where its investments and partnerships can go further, and bring a research-grounded lens to its work. Congrats, Darris!

Congratulations to Brooke Wymer, associate clinical professor, on receiving the 2026 ACES Supervision Award from the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. The award recognizes exemplary contributions to clinical supervision and honors professionals whose peers have identified them as leaders in the field. Well deserved!

Yesterday, faculty met with all three cohorts — totaling 66 students — of seniors in our early childhood education major. They are beginning their “block” semester, during which they spend extended blocks of time in 4K-3rd grade settings and work with their instructors to learn how best to support student learning across content areas.

Congratulations to Dr. Natasha Croom, associate dean for academic and student affairs in Clemson University’s Graduate School and professor of higher education, on being elected president-elect of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. Dr. Croom will serve as ASHE president-elect in 2027, president in 2028 and immediate past president in 2029. ASHE is an international scholarly community dedicated to advancing research, equity and excellence in higher education.

Want to see educators motivating students to get "highly educated!?" As MiSTERs across the state and nation prepare to return to their respective institutions, we look back on a summer of activity at our Call Me MiSTER Summer Leadership Internship, which included multiple camps such as Camp iRock in Pickens County that focused on student enrichment and building foundational skills in literacy. The participating MiSTERs get as much out of it as the students do, as they work directly with students, certified teachers and fellow MiSTERs to build skills they will take into their own classrooms upon graduation.
