The Office of Civic Engagement provides support to faculty, students, staff and administrators that allow them develop, expand, and sustain collaborative, mutually beneficial partnerships with community residents, organizations and institutions. These partnerships contribute to student learning and academic scholarship while contributing to the social and economic well-being of Cleveland, its neig

hborhoods and the Northeast Ohio region. From one-time volunteer experiences for students to service-learning projects embedded in the curriculum to long-term collaborative partnerships that tackle the community's toughest challenges, the Office of Civic Engagement helps campus and community maximize the benefits of their interdependence. Our Office is located in the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs Building Room 136.

The OCE is excited to share our Community Service-Learning End of Year Report. We are proud that the 2024-2025 academic year was another record breaking year for the OCE and its impact in the community. We placed 116 CSU students at 21 community service partner locations where they provided 15,169 K-12th tutoring interactions, along with completing 563 educational and data entry tasks. They served 11,665.50 hours while earning $177,070.30 which aided them in supporting their own educational expenses. Of that, $111,973.30 Federal Work Study dollars were utilized. Over many years, it has been a privilege to work with so many amazing community partners and CSU students who share our mission and passion for serving and making a difference in the lives of community members in and around Cleveland. The OCE is thrilled to announce that Office of Civic Engagement Director, Anita Ruf-Young had been selected as a recipient of the All In Democracy Challenge 2025 Standout Administrator Award! This award is presented in recognition of her leadership in helping college students advance nonpartisan civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation for the 2024 election.

Anita shared, “I am excited and honored to have been selected to receive this award which I hope continues to amplify the important nonpartisan voter engagement work that we do! No one achieves these awards alone, so thank you Gabi Pridemore and to our large civic coalition that helps us each year with our initiatives and programming!”👏🏼

Meet Ericka Stewart who became a new CSU Office of Civic Engagement tutor and student assistant with us this past Spring 2025 semester. Ericka’s positive energy and passion for engaging with her community is inspiring! We placed Ericka at two local public nonprofit community organizations where she not only found her work meaningful but made a big impact to those she interacted with. This great job opportunity enabled Sujood to work while attending school. It also made it possible for her to utilize her FWS award. Why is the Office of Civic Engagement at Cleveland State University highlighting some of our new student employees from the 2024-2025 academic year, like Lucas, over the next few weeks? It’s because they represent all the incredible CSU students who served as tutors and student assistants out in the community. Lucas was a tutor at one of our Cleveland Public Library America Reads branch sites. He not only assisted the K-12th youth with their schoolwork but played games and read with them. According to the library staff, he was loved by the youth and some of the kids came in just to see him! To learn more about Lucas and his tutoring experience, read the two slides above!

The Office of Civic Engagement at Cleveland State University would like to highlight one of our new student assistants from this past year, Kyia, who we placed at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio. She was 1 of 116 Viking Corps and Cleveland Public Library America Reads student employees we hired this year to engage with youth in grades K-12th and other community members. As we approach Spring 2025 commencement, the Cleveland State University Office of Civic Engagement and Director, Anita Ruf-Young, would like to recognize and celebrate three incredible students, Justin, Kaylee, and Jared, who worked with us over the last three years as our Democracy Fellows. Justin and Kaylee also worked with us as CPL America Reads and Viking Corps tutors. It’s been an honor to work with each of you and to witness your academic success, leadership on campus, and development in and commitment to community service and civic engagement. While we will miss you greatly, we are SO proud of all you have accomplished during your time at CSU and can’t wait to see all the amazing things we know you will do next! Cleveland State University Vikings, with finals underway for many of you this week and next, we wanted to wish you success on them and to remind you that the May 6th Primary Election is less than a week away! This Election focuses on important local and state issues that impact our communities and day-to-day lives directly. Remember, ALL elections are important, not just Presidential Elections so be sure to cast your ballot! Make sure you are by using an ID that is in the list of IDs that are accepted if YOU want to Vote Early In-Person or on Election Day! Early In-Person Voting and Vote-By-Mail is happening now!

There is still time to apply! You can apply at one of our on-campus Vote-by-Mail tables that start tomorrow or on our campus canvassing day! Don’t be left out of this election, make your plan to vote today!
