Cleveland Institute of Art Cleveland Institute of Art is a premier college of art and design offering 13 BFA majors.

CIA offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in 13 majors across art, design, craft, and integrated media. We extend our programs to the public through gallery exhibitions, artist lectures, a continuing education program for adults and children, and the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, an art and independent film program.

🎬 A Hollywood moment for CIA!

Yesterday, our community had the opportunity to experience an exclusive screening and Q&A with director Kitao Sakurai, a Cleveland Heights native who grew up watching films at the Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Kitao directed the reboot of Street Fighter Movie, a major co-production between Legendary, Paramount Pictures, and Capcom USA.

A local kid who fell in love with movies in Northeast Ohio (encouraged by his mother, Guggenheim Fellow and former CIA faculty, kasumi)β€”Kitao is now helping shape a global entertainment franchise and hiring the next generation of artists (including hand-drawn animators, whose art was heavily present throughout the film).

When our students meet professionals like Kitao, they're not just hearing career advice, they're also seeing proof that a path from Cleveland to the global stage is possible.

We're thrilled to congratulate painting alum Ashton Burton ’26, whose work, π˜›π˜©π˜³π˜¦π˜’π˜₯𝘦π˜₯ π˜™π˜°π˜°π˜΅π˜΄, has been named to the 2026 AXA Art Prize Exhibition Shortlist!

Selected from nearly 600 submissions representing 132 schools across the U.S., Ashton's piece was chosen as one of just 40 works to advance to the exhibition.

Ahead of exhibiting in New York, Burton reflected on his experience, sharing: "Opportunities are closer than we think when we apply ourselves to our practices and embrace aspects of ourselves that are tested."

πŸ† We're proud to share that CIA's Interactive Media Lab was recognized by the Greater Cleveland Partnership's Best of Tech Awards for Education and Training, recognizing organizations that create pathways into the technology and build the talent needed to compete and grow.

What does that mean for CIA students? Animation and Game Design students have a Hollywood-caliber studio and arcade to create new worlds and bring characters to life. Design students have production studios that help turn their concepts into everyday products that people love to use. And visual arts students have tools that allow them to expand their practice and explore new ways of making.

From the classroom to the workplace, CIA is committed to cultivating creative and innovative leaders in art + design!

The Faculty Exhibition, a tradition spanning more than 100 years, showcases the innovation and artistry of our faculty. Alongside it, the Studio Operations Exhibition highlights the ingenuity of our Studio Operations team members, experts who support students and faculty every day while pursuing their own creative practices!
