Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Course

Ready to make a difference when seconds count? The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course is designed for individuals who want to develop lifesaving skills and serve their communities with confidence. Whether you are a firefighter, law enforcement officer, workplace responder, coach, security professional, or someone interested in emergency care, this course provides the knowledge and hands-on training needed to recognize, assess, and manage medical emergencies until advanced help arrives.

Students will learn patient assessment, CPR and AED use, airway management, bleeding control, shock management, trauma care, medical emergencies, and emergency scene operations. Through interactive classroom instruction, realistic scenarios, and practical skills training, participants will gain the confidence to respond effectively in real-world emergencies.

Upon successful completion, students will be eligible for Emergency Medical Responder certification and will be prepared to provide critical care during the first moments of an emergency. No prior medical experience is required.

Lights and sirens only save 3 minutes during transport.

A new study in Prehospital Emergency Care analyzed 25,902 ambulance transports using Google's transportation model to estimate the real-time benefit of emergency driving.

The findings:
→ Median time savings: 3 to 3.3 minutes per trip
→ 18 seconds per kilometer
→ L&S triple the risk of ambulance collision during transport
→ Transport phase carries the highest risk of fatal crash injuries
→ Large sample, real CAD data, validated model

Three minutes is the number. For some patients, that window is clinically meaningful.
For most, it isn't.

The cardiac arrest that is down 20 minutes before EMS arrival. The stable trauma. These are patients where emergency driving adds risk without changing the outcome.

This isn't about eliminating L&S use. It's about applying the same standard we use for every other intervention: does the benefit outweigh the risk for this patient, on this call?

Right now, L&S are used on 1 in 4 transports nationally. NHTSA's target is under 5%.

The gap between those two numbers is a systems problem that needs more attention.

The care a burn patient receives, from the initial moments after injury through the journey of healing, can improve outcomes.

We invite first responders, EMS providers, nurses, and healthcare professionals to join us for the First Responder & Nursing Burn Care Symposium, a full-day education event focused on burn care from the scene through recovery.

This symposium offers two tracks:

Track 1: First Responders/EMTs
Track 2: Nurses

Participants will hear from burn care experts and professionals on topics including:

• High-risk burn assessment and stabilization
• Prehospital care of the burn patient
• Chemical injury and decontamination
• Airway concerns and toxic inhalation
• Burn resuscitation and critical care challenges
• Pain management
• Managing major events, including blast injuries, house fires, and SALT triage
• Rehabilitation and survivor outcomes
• Mental health, addiction, coping needs, and responder resilience
• The important role of burn nursing and certification

We are honored to welcome Dennis Gardin, burn survivor and Executive Director of the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, as our keynote speaker.
