Meet Dr. Lance Yonkos, Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Environmental Science & Technology at UMD.

Interested in microplastics, bioaccumulation, contaminant fate, or aquatic toxicology? Dr. Yonkos’s research explores how contaminants move through aquatic environments, how they affect organisms, and how environmental science can help protect water quality and ecosystem health.

Swipe/Watch the next slide to hear Dr. Yonkos introduce himself and share more about his research, and work in ENST.

Students interested in these research areas are encouraged to connect with Dr. Yonkos and learn more about opportunities in environmental toxicology and aquatic science.

Why does soil chemistry matter for our environment? 🌱🧪

Meet Dr. Jared Wilmoth, Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science & Technology at UMD.
His research focuses on soil chemistry and soil chemical interfaces, exploring how environmental soil systems connect with biogeochemical cycles and Earth’s climate.

In this ENST spotlight, Dr. Wilmoth and his student Jason share why soil chemistry is important and how the tiny chemical interactions happening in soils can have a big impact on nutrients, carbon cycling, climate, and environmental health.

We are also excited to celebrate Dr. Wilmoth as one of the ENST Award recipients for the 2025–2026 academic year, receiving the Excellence in Teaching Award. Congratulations, Dr. Wilmoth! 🎉

Have you ever wondered why microbes are so important? 🌱🦠

Meet Dr. Stephanie Yarwood, Professor and Graduate Director in the Department of Environmental Science & Technology at UMD.
Her research focuses on the microbial ecology of soils across agricultural, wetland, forest, and urban ecosystems. Her work helps us understand how soil microbes influence nitrogen cycling, greenhouse gas emissions, carbon storage, and sustainable soil management.

In this ENST spotlight, Dr. Yarwood and her student Caroline share why microbes matter and how tiny organisms can have a big impact on our environment.
