Applications open now for our NEW ENST Alumni-Student Mentoring Program‼️

This is a brand new initiative established for the purpose of connecting our current undergraduate junior or senior students with ENST alumni working in the field of environmental science. This program is intended to provide students with the opportunity to learn from the experiences of our graduates and build our ENST community beyond our campus boundaries.

As a participant in the Program, you will be paired with one alumni working as a professional in the field of environmental science and given the opportunity to connect with them in a structured, bi-monthly (i.e. once every-other month) Zoom meeting held in the late afternoon or early evening. There will be one mandatory in-person kick-off event in early November where you will meet your mentor, and the first group Zoom meeting will take place in early December. Additionally, you will be able to meet or connect with your mentor at the frequency of your joint choosing outside of the structured group meetings.

Applications close Tuesday (10/20)!

Today, our ENST200 – Fundamentals of Soil Science class headed out to the field to study a real soil profile 🌱🪨
Instead of just learning about soil horizons in the classroom, students got to observe and describe them directly in the field — looking at depth, texture, structure, color, boundaries, drainage, and other soil properties.
We also talked about the major soil-forming factors — organisms, topography, climate, parent material, and time — and how they shape the soil we see today.

Nothing beats learning soil science with actual soil under your feet 🤎

Field research in action!🌱

ENST students Tyler Kirk and Sarah Spicer are working with the Wiles Soil Quality Lab at CMREC Beltsville to study how salicylic acid may help soybeans resist drought stress.
Using Brix and SPAD meters, they’re measuring sugar content, chlorophyll, nitrogen, and temperature to compare treated soybean plots with untreated controls. 🌿🔬
Research like this helps us better understand how crops respond to environmental stress and how we can support more resilient agricultural systems.

Ever wondered why PFAS are called “forever chemicals”? 💧

These widely used chemicals can persist in the environment for a long time and have been found in products such as nonstick cookware, food packaging, stain-resistant fabrics, water-resistant clothing, cosmetics, and firefighting foam.

Because PFAS can move through water, soil, food systems, and ecosystems, researchers continue to study their environmental and human health impacts.

Swipe through to learn what PFAS are, where they’re found, how exposure can happen, and why this research matters. 🌱

Meet Dr. David R. Tilley, Associate Professor in ENST, and an innovator at the intersection of ecology, engineering, and technology. 🌿🤖

His work combines nature, technology, and AI to create smarter, greener solutions for a more sustainable future. 🌍✨

Meet Christopher Hernandez, a second-year ENST student at the University of Maryland conducting research in Dr. Lansing’s lab. 🔬

Christopher’s work explores the biochemical methane potential of dairy food waste and its potential as a feedstock for anaerobic digestion. He also helps operate a 40-liter fermenter, feeding it twice a week and analyzing pH, VFAs, and SCOD.

His research is helping advance sustainable solutions for converting food waste into renewable energy. 🌱⚗️
