Michelle Erskine, an SLP at the University of Maryland-College Park is inviting African American families with children ages 6-10 to participate in an online study to understand how children comprehend different dialects of English. Children will receive individual attention from an enthusiastic speech pathologist as they engage in a variety of language and literacy activities. The study takes a total of approximately 1.5 hours across two shorter Zoom sessions. Caregivers/guardians will also complete two short questionnaires about their child’s language and reading skills. As a token of appreciation, all families will be compensated $20, receive a free language and literacy screening, and a small gift or book for their child. If you or someone you know may be eligible, please complete this form https://ter.ps/dmspsignup.

Happy ! Here is a participant sitting in front of the eye tracker during one of our studies. Eye trackers are commonly used in language science research to measure eye movements in response to linguistic and visual stimuli. Pretty cool, huh?

.. Well maybe the "real" Elsa was not here, but an equally kind and joyous participant was, indeed ! Here she is holding up her certificate of completion next to one of our experimenters. She finished all of the tasks with a smile. We love to see it!

Did you know that today is the National Day of Giving? This day occurs on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year in order to remind us to give to those in need.

Speaking of giving, thanks again to everyone who donated to the Holiday Book Drive! Now that we have surpassed our goal, our next step is to wrap up the books, throw on a ribbon, and give each child their present. How exciting!

We would also like to thank our participants for giving us a part of their day to come in and participate in our studies. We (literally) couldn't do it without them! If you know someone who would be interested in participating in one of our studies please visit and share our webpage at https://learningtotalk.umd.edu/child-studies/
