University of Maryland Writing Project

University of Maryland Writing Project As a teacher-led organization, UMdWP’s goal is to respond to the needs of teachers of writing in our surrounding counties.

The UMdWP, housed in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership is co-directed by Maggie Polizos Peterson, Assistant Clinical Professor in Elementary Education and Beth Singleton, Doctoral Candidate in English Education. Since 2006, UMdWP has provided a venue for teacher leaders to learn more about writing instruction at many levels and across subject areas, while creating a ne

twork of educators in our region who are committed to reflective, collaborative practice and want to improve writing instruction in their classrooms and schools. Our goals for the future are to position the UMdWP to focus not only on the teaching of writing but also to create a model of professional development, teacher leadership and reform. Firmly rooted in the belief that teachers are the best teachers of teachers, UMdWP will begin to offer workshops for teachers, taught by teachers, throughout the school year and each summer, beginning in the summer of 2016.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our dear friend, mentor, and colleague Pam Bryant-Hollins has passed. Pam was among the founding members of the University of Maryland Writing Project where she taught us to embrace ourselves as writers through the practice of Morning Pages and her signature ringing of the bells. We invite our Writing Project friends to share their remembrances of Pam. We know her legacy will live on through the many teachers she influenced and the many students she inspired.

The funeral service, interment, and repast will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at St. John's Episcopal Church and Cemetery, 11040 Baltimore Avenue, Beltsville, MD. 20705.

FREE WORKSHOP with Maryland's Poet Laureate Grace Cavalieri

WRITE YOUR LIFE: A Poetry Session by Grace Cavalieri

Everyone has a story to tell. And no one has another’s story. That’s why each person is invited to enter this practice. Everything we need to write is within us or within our view. This session will access the poem from the data base inside us, and the world outside us, and we’ll use language that is everyday speech. “Poetry “is just a word that allows us to notice more, see more, be in touch with our natural and emotional environments.

The session is October 14, 2-3PM. You can see the sign up page by clicking here:

A MASTER CLASS FOR BEGINNERS AND PROFESSIONALS
