While most of our students, faculty and staff were away for fall break, members of the Maryland Club Tennis student organization distributed programming material with a graphic containing racist imagery directed at people who are Black or African American. They emailed this information to other university tennis clubs in the region about last weekend’s fall tournament at College Park.

UMD staff responded immediately. This matter has been referred to UMPD and the Office of Student Conduct for investigation, and the incident will be reviewed by the Office of Civil Rights & Sexual Misconduct. And, importantly, we condemned the image in no uncertain terms. It was deeply harmful and offensive, and we apologize for its detrimental impact on one and all.
