How much of HERstory is reflected in the HIStory of exercise science and sports medicine?

A new Special Communication in the Translational Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine reviews 55 years of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise publications to examine the representation of female research participants and female manuscript authors. After reviewing 10,371 articles published from 1969–2023, the authors found that female individuals accounted for 44% of research participants and 28% of all authors across the journal’s history.

These findings highlight longstanding disparities while offering important data that can help inform future journal policy and practice aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of both female participants and female authors.

FYI!!

Due to the forecast for severe weather on May 20, the main Commencement ceremony will move to its planned alternative date on Thursday, May 21, 2026. This change does not affect individual school and college ceremonies.

We understand that this change may be disruptive, but know that we have made this decision to prioritize safety and to provide the best possible experience for graduates and guests.

More information and the ceremony live stream will be available at commencement.umd.edu. We look forward to celebrating our Terrapin graduates!

All work and no play? Couldn’t be us.

In celebration of the last day of class, we hosted our 2nd annual Faculty v. Student Games with our activity courses KNES186: Basketball and KNES182: Soccer. The scoreboard may have said students won, but with all players bringing energy, laughs, and great sportsmanship to the courts, we were all winners that day!
