University of Maryland Language House Immersion Program

University of Maryland Language House Immersion Program The Language House is an immersive residential program at University of Maryland where students live

The Language House Immersion Program, created in 1989, was the first living-learning program established at the University of Maryland. Open to sophomores and above (second-semester freshmen can be admitted only as exceptions), it provides students, who are serious about language learning, with the opportunity for daily language and cultural immersion in an organized study environment. Students wh

o choose this program will develop communication skills in both academic and daily life settings through diverse organized activities, informal daily contacts, annual Language House events, and supplemental coursework in the target language. The Language House (LH) also provides an international community atmosphere in which residents work together to develop language fluency under the direction of a mentor, a native or near-native speaker of the language and a faculty liaison from the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Students also acquire an appreciation of the specific historical, geographical, and sociological world of the target culture(s). Ten language clusters are available: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Russian, and Spanish.

Join us next week for our first event of the semester, and the kickoff for Black History Month!
On Thursday, February 5, from 4-6pm, we will welcome award winning documentary filmmaker Fred Kudjo Kuwornu for a screening of his film We Were Here: The Untold Story of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe. The film brings to light the often-overlooked presence of African and Black individuals in Renaissance Europe, examining how they were depicted in some of the era’s most celebrated works of art and questioning long-held assumptions about race, status and representation in European history.
