The University of Maryland's IAA offers hands-on, business-oriented education that prepares students to succeed in agricultural and natural resource focused careers. The Institute of Applied Agriculture (IAA) is a 60-credit, two-year academic certificate program in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland, College Park. The IAA provides the entrepreneurial, technical, leadership and communication skills you’ll need to work in and manage successful agricultural enterprises, including golf courses, food systems, sports fields, landscaping companies, and farm operations and markets, and nonprofits.

The exhibit is almost ready! The opening reception is TODAY from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 21, celebrating the 50-plus contributing artists. Light refreshments will be served, as will edible insect products, featured through a UMD Do Good Campus Fund-supported project. All are welcome! “Another Look, Another World” will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Nov. 6 in the Herman Maril Gallery, 1309 Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building.

While many student workers spend their days at desks, IAA alumni and current LARC student, Jacqueline Bravo, is outside with gloves on, a bucket ready and tools in hand. She spends about a dozen hours a week during the school year and around 30 over the summer, weeding, clearing leaves, pruning and more. She’s got a cool campus job as a Memorial Chapel Garden Steward 🪏

"Another Look, Another World" is an interdisciplinary exhibition exploring how visual art may deepen our understanding of Maryland’s insect biodiversity and inspire greater appreciation for the ecological roles insects play in our environment.

There is an open call for UMD students to participate in the Visual Art Competition, with cash prizes for top entries. The Intent to Submit Form is due by Friday, October 2. Other campus community visual works/art may be submitted as well for non-competitive purposes.

The opening reception for this Arts for All project will be held on Wednesday, October 21 from 5-7pm at the Art/Sociology Building. See flyer for more information. 🦋

📸 And the winner is… Nick Gallo! Nick’s winning photo was captured at Carnegie Cave in Pennsylvania during his internship at Red Barn Ranch, where he combined environmental education, outdoor adventure, and animal care. From teaching kids about farm animals to leading hiking, caving, and rafting trips, Nick’s internship was full of hands-on learning and adventure! 🌱🥾
