Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism leads a new generation of sports journalists to view

The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism serves Merrill students and professional journalists, as well as the university and greater community through its academic offerings, research and analysis. Shirley Povich was an eyewitness to the most significant sporting events of the 20th century and his fearless reporting took on questions of race, religion and gender. The Center is a focal point

for research and analysis of the current topics in sports and sports media. The Washington-Baltimore area is one of the nation’s liveliest sports markets, offering rich and diverse first-hand opportunities for students interested in sports journalism. The Povich Center prepares sports journalism students for these opportunities through a range of courses in sports reporting and broadcasting and in the intersection of sports and cultures. Students are afforded the opportunity to interact with some of the nation’s leading sports journalists through classes and special events.

We were proud sponsors of the 2026 Associated Press Sports Editors convention this weekend! Thanks for visiting the D.C. area, APSE.

Merrill College student Austin DeSisto served as the photographer, even more of our students volunteered, our alums spoke on panels — and one of our reporting projects won a first-place award in the APSE contest!

Today would've been the 121st birthday of Shirley Povich, the legendary Washington Post sports columnist and our namesake.

Povich's incredible career inspired the creation of The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism 15 years ago. We at the Povich Center and Philip Merrill College of Journalism are proud to honor his remarkable legacy every day by preparing students to be innovators and leaders in all facets of sports media.

Our unique experiential curriculum and programs elevate and amplify discussion of race, gender, politics and the world — just as Povich did each morning in The Post. Happy birthday, Shirley!
