The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism serves Merrill students and professional journalists, as well as the university and greater community through its academic offerings, research and analysis. Shirley Povich was an eyewitness to the most significant sporting events of the 20th century and his fearless reporting took on questions of race, religion and gender. The Center is a focal point

The Washington-Baltimore area is one of the nation’s liveliest sports markets, offering rich and diverse first-hand opportunities for students interested in sports journalism. Thank you to the Lucchino Family Foundation for donating $37,500 to support our Camden Yards oral history project!

The project, currently in production, will be a comprehensive account of events that led to the creation of the Orioles' iconic ballpark.

The Lucchino Family Foundation is establishing the project fund in memory of Larry Lucchino, who served as Orioles president from 1988-93 and later as president of the Padres and Red Sox. The foundation will add a challenge gift of $37,500 when an additional $25,000 has been raised.
