SLLC is celebrating 25 years, but the Language House story goes back even further! 🏡🌎

This Throwback Thursday, we’re revisiting this circa-2016 photo of former Language House faculty mentors outside St. Mary’s Hall and celebrating a community that has helped generations of Terps bring language learning to life.

Founded in 1989, the Language House has been integral to language learning on campus, giving students a place to practice their skills, explore cultures, and build connections beyond the classroom. Its living-learning community embodies a central part of the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures’ mission: connecting people through language and culture.

As we mark SLLC’s anniversary, we’re also honoring the Language House faculty, mentors, and students whose dedication has helped build that foundation and made St. Mary’s Hall feel like home. ❤️🐢

Korean language students gathered to learn about Korean Alphabet Day and were able to practice calligraphy, learn a K-pop dance and have some Korean snacks and beverages. Special thanks to Professor Emeritus Dr. Ramsey and his wife Younghi Ramsey who organized Korean Alphabet day for many many years! Thanks to this year’s organizer, Seong Minne Koh!

The Korean program and the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures was thrilled to have Emeritus professor, Dr. Robert Ramsey and his wife, former Korean lecturer, Younghi Ramsey back to speak to us on this 580th year anniversary of the publication of the Korean alphabet. After the talk, students practiced traditional calligraphy and also learned a K-pop dance as well as enjoyed Korean snacks and beverages. A representative from the Korean percussion ensemble invited students to join their group on campus. Special thanks to event organizer Seong Minne Koh!

Learning languages opens doors—and this Throwback Thursday takes us back to March 2001! 🗞️🌎

The Language Center Update spotlighted Donald B. Hirsch and his endowment supporting University of Maryland undergraduates who want to put their language skills to work in careers beyond language teaching—from business and law to public policy and government service.

Hirsch’s own career in international economics showed him the value of connecting with people in their native languages. His goal? To help students discover those possibilities, too.

“My idea has always been to encourage people to learn languages for more purposes than just language teaching.” —Donald B. Hirsch

Today our students still benefit from Mr. Hirsch’s generous gift and apply for the Hirsch scholarship each spring!

Here’s to language learning that connects people, expands perspectives, and inspires new paths. 🐢

Let’s take a trip back to Spring 1998, when the Language Center in the College of Arts & Humanities at the University of Maryland celebrated the faculty, students, and community members making a difference through language education and outreach.

This issue of the Language Center Newsletter highlights recipients of the President’s Outstanding Service to the Schools Award, recognizing their work connecting Maryland’s language programs with local schools and communities. From the Olympiad of Spoken Russian to Language Day, these efforts brought language learning and cultural exchange to thousands of students across the region. 🌎📖

Nearly three decades later, the commitment to language education, outreach, and community engagement continues. ❤️
