A cat literally saved an entire army from starvation by being too fat. During the Crimean War in 1855, British troops captured the Russian port of Sevastopol after a brutal year-long siege - and found absolutely nothing to eat.
The city was destroyed. The people were dying. There was no food anywhere. Except one very well-fed tabby cat was sitting on a pile of rubble, looking suspiciously plump for a city where everything was dead.
The soldiers named him Tom and took him in, but they kept watching him get fatter while everyone else was starving. So they followed him.
Tom led them straight through the ruins to a hidden storeroom the Russians had sealed off before the siege - packed with food. Then he led them to more caches near the docks.
The cat had been living off the mice feeding on secret food supplies, and accidentally revealed the stash that kept thousands of soldiers alive.
