Last semester, students in Dr. Carly Woods’ 458M: Rhetoric, Memory, and Culture course created a collaborative memory project by curating an exhibit. The exhibit, “Keep Maryland Weird,” features items from the University Archives and Literature Rare Book Collection between the 1970s and 1990s.

Special thanks to Jenny Schollaert in Special Collections, Dr. Carly Woods, and student curators Felicity Dogbatse and Ariel Griffith.

The display is located in the Lobby and Welcome Desk Foyer of Hornbake Library for the rest of the semester!

How cool is this! Dr. Walcott was featured in a new article for WIRED about Black Twitter and Threads! She explains, “I think it matters more to Black users where they can find each other at volume rather than the overall politics of the platform.”

Launching our i-mail series for the semester, where we feature student internships! This features Taylor Guberman’s Internship at Sam Edelman’s Headquarters in NYC. ✨

As a Marketing Intern, Taylor says the best part was “getting to work on creative projects and photo shoots and see how ideas actually come to life in a real fashion company.”

The semester is in full swing and we have lots of exciting events to promote! Check out these 3 “Save the Dates” for September 30!

1️⃣ Students in Dr. Carly Woods’ Rhetoric, Memory, and Culture (COMM 458M) course partnered with UMD’s Special Collections and University Archives to curate a free exhibit for the lobby of Hornbake Library! 📚 The theme of the exhibit is “Keep Maryland Weird,” and it features items from the University Archives dating from the 1970s through the 1990s.

It is available to view all semester, with a reception September 30 at 4 pm. The reception will feature a brief program with reflections from some of the student curators.
