A packed house gathered to hear Andrew Ross Sorkin last week, Co-Anchor, CNBC’s Squawk Box, Financial Columnist, The New York Times, Editor at large, Dealbook, talk about his latest book: 1929: The Inside Story of the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History.

From drawing parallels between 1929 and today’s economy to conversations around AI, Bitcoin, CEO interviews and ambition, Sorkin kept the audience engaged throughout the night. He also shared an important message for students: while learning to work with AI is essential, so is the ability to sit down with a pen, paper and your own thoughts to create something meaningful.

Clinical Professor of Finance David Kass helped bring Sorkin to the Smith School, drawing on previous interactions with him — including Sorkin’s October 23, 2025, talk at Politics and Prose in Washington and earlier exchanges at the 2009 and 2012 Berkshire Hathaway annual meetings.

The 2026 Dingman Competition was both thrilling and inspiring - culminating in over $170,000 in prize money to the winners!
Pitch Dingman, the University of Maryland’s premier entrepreneurial competition hosted by Smith’s Dingman-Lamone Center for Entrepreneurship, featured 10 teams of finalists.
The journey to last night’s final began with a pool of 130 applicants for the “Shark Tank”-style competition.
Nithin Skantha Murugan, CMNS MS ‘26, won the top award of $25,000 for his company Renfort.
It’s an AI operating system for dental clinics. The platform listens to patient conversations, automatically populating their medical chart so dentists can focus on patients.

Congratulations to all of the winners!
