The Board of Directors of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas initiated the development of the Animal Husbandry Department in 1903. Today, the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University has achieved national and international prominence as the largest and most complex department of animal science in the nation. As part of its land grant mission, the Animal Science Department

strives to meet the needs of all citizens by providing outstanding teaching, research and extension programs. Currently, disciplines within the department include reproductive physiology, animal breeding and genetics, food science, microbiology, equine science, dairy science, animal nutrition and meat science. The department responds to the Texas animal industry through research and education programs in equine, beef, dairy, swine, sheep and goats. At Texas A&M Livestock Judging Camp, 4-H and FFA members sharpened their skills in animal evaluation, oral reasons and decision-making while learning from Texas A&M Animal Science faculty, staff and members of our nationally recognized Texas A&M Livestock Judging Team Livestock Judging Team.

The lessons learned through livestock judging extend far beyond the contest arena, helping students build confidence, communication skills and critical thinking that will serve them throughout their lives and careers. We’re proud to play a role in preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders.

For more than 20 consecutive years, Aggies have qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo. This year, five members of the Texas A&M Women’s Rodeo Team will continue that tradition.

After capturing the Southern Region Women’s Team Championship and six team titles throughout the season, these Aggies are headed to Casper, Wyoming, with a chance to compete for a national championship.

Barbecue Summer Camp brought together barbecue enthusiasts for three days of hands-on learning, expert instruction and plenty of time around the pit. Participants explored topics like meat selection, seasoning, fire management and smoking techniques while learning what goes into great Texas barbecue.
