News and World Report among public institutions and we are the largest nuclear engineering program in the U.S. The department offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels in nuclear engineering, as well as a fully-online master's of engineering program. There are many sources of financial assistance including scholarships, fellowships and assistantships. Research facilities include two research reactors – Texas A&M is the only university to own two –, seven accelerators (including a unique micro-beam device for determining the response to ionizing radiation on a cell-by-cell basis), a high-energy pulsed plasma laboratory, a heat transfer lab, and many other state-of-the-art facilities.

How could state-of-the-art computing techonology help nuclear engineering researchers better understand radiation behavior?

Computing company NVIDIA has awarded four advanced graphic processing units to a research project led by nuclear engineering professor Dr. Jean Ragusa. These GPUs will support research on advanced computational methods for simulating radiation transport and making better use of specialized GPU hardware for this application.

As a nuclear engineering undergraduate and graduate student at Texas A&M University, Dr. Joshua Jarrell made the most of his education experience. The classes he took, experiences he had and the mentors who guided him all prepared him for a career presiding over the nation’s nuclear fuel management systems.

Now, Dr. Jarrell is the deputy assistant secretary for the nuclear fuel cycle at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy, and we recognized his achievements with the Nuclear Engineering Distinguished Former Student Award during the fall scholarship banquet last week.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are rapidly transforming the nuclear engineering field. In a summit that brought together leaders from academia, national laboratories, industry and government, Texas A&M University is taking the initiative on discussing how to bring these new capabilities from research to trusted technology.

The Texas A&M Department of Nuclear Engineering, in collaboration with The Texas A&M University System Nuclear Security Office and the Texas A&M Institute of Data Science, hosted the AI for Nuclear Summit August 19–20. The two-day conference featured speakers from a wide range of institutions, including faculty members from Texas A&M and other universities, representatives from nuclear companies and scientists from several U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories.

He believed solving global challenges required collaboration across continents and cultures – especially the United States and Japan. His global perspective and commitment to Texas A&M University embody that vision, adding to the College of Engineering’s legacy while creating new opportunities for faculty, students and researchers in the Department of Nuclear Engineering.
