Research facilities include two research reactors โ€“ Texas A&M is the only university to own two โ€“, seven accelerators (including a unique micro-beam device for determining the response to ionizing radiation on a cell-by-cell basis), a high-energy pulsed plasma laboratory, a heat transfer lab, and many other state-of-the-art facilities.

What a great two days of discussing the present and future of AI in nuclear! ๐Ÿ‘

Today, Division Director of Scientific Computing & AI Christopher Ritter from Idaho National Laboratory delivered a keynote presentation about the Genesis Mission. Throughout the day, scientists, faculty, and industry representatives discussed the perspective of national laboratories, academia, and nuclear companies on using artificial intelligence to bring nuclear engineering advancements to deployment.

Day 1 of the AI for Nuclear Summit is in the books ๐Ÿ‘

University of Michigan Professor Dr. Karthik Duraisamy delivered today's keynote, presenting on the current status and promising future of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the physical sciences. Then, today featured a series of talks from Texas A&M faculty and scientists from national laboratories about AI in physics-rich domains, using data and AI in nuclear engineering, and a panel discussion about leveraging foundational AI breakthroughs for nuclear research and development. At lunch, students shared their AI-related nuclear engineering research with peers, faculty, and summit attendees during a lively poster session.

Understanding how the physics of an active nuclear reactor behaves is crucial for safety, efficiency and the development of new technology. But high-fidelity computer simulations of these systems can be complex and computationally intensive, making it difficult for them to run fast enough for real-time applications. Researchers are proposing artificial intelligence tools to enhance physics simulation software to solve this problem.

Nuclear engineering professor Dr. Yang Liu leads a research project that was selected for a Nuclear Research and Development award through the U.S. Department of Energyโ€™s Nuclear Energy University Program in 2026. These awards support the development of innovative nuclear energy technology.

Liuโ€™s project will focus on integrating a form of artificial intelligence into physics simulation software to improve real-time modeling of changing systems.

What are our Atomic Aggies up to this summer? Vincenzo Zingales, Ph.D. student and graduate research assistant, is an engineering intern at Aalo Atomics. He is supporting the system thermal-hydraulic design of the Aalo-X reactor. His work spans using the Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table (PIRT), scaling, integral test facility design, and safety analysis using the reactor analysis software RELAP5-3D, building on his strong background in nuclear system thermal-hydraulics.

"One of the highlights of this summer was being present when the Aalo Critical Test Reactor went critical on July 4th," Vincenzo said, referring to the reactor pictured here behind him. "I feel privileged to have witnessed that milestone firsthand."
