Texas Water Resources Institute TWRI provides science-based, community-supported solutions for Texas' pressing water challenges.

Securing and managing sufficient, healthy water is one of the most significant challenges facing Texas today. Major water quantity and water quality problems exist, and solutions are needed to support economic growth, ecological sustainability, public health and continued food production across the state. Earlier this week, TWRI Program Specialist Madeleine Spencer attended a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department mussel mark-recapture sampling event in Brushy Creek.

The survey was led by TPWD's Clint Robertson, with support from other agencies and organizations across Texas. 2026 is year three of this study, which is surveying a section of the creek for mussels that were previously captured and attached with a PIT tag, as well as new mussels that are now using this habitat. This practice helps to better understand how changes in the creek impact the mussel population over time.

Brushy Creek is also currently in the watershed protection plan (WPP) development process, and TWRI is helping facilitate that process with local leaders and residents. The next Brushy Creek Watershed Partnership stakeholder meeting is September 23 in Round Rock and open to all interested residents.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service's Healthy Lawns and Healthy Waters program has three workshops around Texas this month!

- Aug. 18 in Seguin
- Aug. 20 in Flower Mound

At Healthy Lawns and Healthy Waters workshops, every participant gets rainwater harvesting training, information on lawn and landscape best practices for their specific region, AND the opportunity to have their soil tested for free!

It was a hot day while out monitoring at Middle Yegua Creek recently!
