We are proud to announce that ECEN’s Dr. Nick Duffield and his former Ph.D. student, Dr. Ziyi Zhang, together with their co-authors Dr. Zhe Zhang and her former student Dr. Diya Li, have been honored with the Jack Dangermond Award for the years 2022–2025. 🏆

The award is presented every 4 years to the authors of an outstanding paper published in the ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information. The team's winning research uses geospatial AI to uncover how human mobility patterns vary across places and communities, providing insights that can help address real-world challenges.

Big news for one of our Aggie innovators! 💡

Congratulations to Dr. Dorsa Talebi — Texas A&M ECEN PhD graduate and Postdoctoral Research Associate in the EMPE (Electric Machines & Power Electronics) Lab under Dr. Hamid Toliyat — on being selected for the Activate Houston Cohort for her startup, Simora Core!

⚡ Talebi's project centers on a Wirelessly Excited Synchronous Machine (WESM) — an innovative compact brushless electric motor technology with the potential to reduce reliance on rare-earth permanent magnets while improving reliability and controllability.

As an Activate Fellow, Talebi will receive funding, mentorship and entrepreneurial support to help advance Simora Core from a promising research innovation toward commercial impact.

👍 We're proud to see Aggie engineers turning bold ideas into technologies that can help shape the future of energy.

💡Dr. Jonathan Snodgrass was recently featured by NBC News discussing the future of the electric grid.

During the segment, Snodgrass shared his expertise on how growing energy demands from data centers and emerging technologies are changing the way we think about grid reliability and resilience.

⚡As assistant director of the Texas A&M Smart Grid Center and a senior research engineer, his work helps develop critical solutions needed to power the future.

We are excited to share our collaboration with the Texas A&M Cybersecurity Center on a $2M award under the NSF CyberAICorps Scholarship for Service (CyberAI SFS) program.

The award will help the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University prepare Aggies for emerging cybersecurity challenges as artificial intelligence continues to transform cyber defense and cyber risk.

Special congratulations to our ECEN faculty Nick Duffield and Katherine Rogers Davis, who are co-leading this project effort.

We look forward to further equipping our students for success in an increasingly AI-enabled digital and technology ecosystem.

We're excited to share that new research from Dr. Yang Shen and his team has been accepted for presentation at the Foundation Models for Life Sciences (FM4LS) workshop at the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML).

🌐 Supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the team's Cell Model AI research combines explainable AI and systems-level modeling to help scientists better understand the biological mechanisms behind disease and advance the development of new therapies.

Congratulations to Dr. Yang Shen, Dr. Dongkwan Kim and Yiming Gao on this incredible milestone!

Texas A&M Electrical and Computer Engineering is proud to congratulate Don B. Russell, professor of electrical and computer engineering, on his appointment as a Foreign Corresponding Member of the Accademia delle Scienze dell'Istituto di Bologna.

🌐 Russell was unanimously elected by the Academy's Assembly of Full Members during its June 23, 2026, plenary session in recognition of his internationally respected expertise and contributions to the scientific community. His appointment to Section II – Technical Sciences reflects both the Academy's high regard for his scholarship and its invitation to contribute to its centuries-long tradition of scientific dialogue and discovery.

💡 A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Harry E. Bovay, Jr. Chair, University Distinguished Professor and Regents Professor, Russell's impact on electrical engineering continues to extend far beyond Texas A&M through his leadership, research and service to the profession.

Professor Jean-François Chamberland is leveraging AI to enhance student experience at Texas A&M ECEN.

Chamberland has developed a system called "ageation," a framework that transforms LaTeX documents into narrated Manim animations, and has used it to create instructional videos for his students.

Originally designed to generate explainers for arXiv research papers, Chamberland began exploring classroom applications and has developed the technology for instructional use. The model is currently being tested in his classroom, with potential to expand to other core ECEN classes.

Chamberland’s original agentic framework builds on the Mainm framework maintained by ManimCE community.
