From attending orientation on the first day of their new studies to giving tours after several years as a part of the department, we’re thankful to the graduate students that keep Aerospace Engineering moving in new and fascinating directions.

Ph.D student Kacy Carter is this year’s Stanger Endowed Graduate Fellow who will be using this upcoming year to work on plasma related research in the department.

The Sandra and William R. Wheeler ’70 Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Aerospace Engineering was awarded to Ph.D. Student Adam Zheng, who will be using his time as a fellow to pursue his passion for space exploration.

Aerospace Engineering Ph.D. Priscilla Nizio Ho responded to an email sent to all potential graduates with a speech she began on her phone, which led to an amazing moment this past weekend where she delivered the Student Appreciation speech on behalf of all graduates at her ceremony.

She is now on her way to a job at NASA and used the speech to thank her peers, faculty adviser and partner for giving her a place to grow and pushing her to be the best student and person she could be.

Thank you to Vertiflite magazine for this piece highlighting a decade of research done by Dr. Moble Benedict and post-doc David Coleman that has produced a mini vertical flight vehicle inspired by nature’s original vertical flight experts–hummingbirds!

Whereas traditional flight wings are purposefully designed to be less flexible, the wings on this tiny robot were designed to intentionally twist and deform to imitate hummingbird wings in flight.

Dr. Benedict says the results of this research could aid in the future of creating autonomous vehicles for everything from infrastructure inspection to environmental monitoring.

Sebastian Munoz Burrafato has spent the summer as an intern in the aerospace laboratory at the University de Sao Paolo (USP) in Sao Carlos, designing and building a small scale controlled aircraft.
His team focused on creating small aircraft that can fly further with larger payloads. They created a design from scratch using computer simulations and then experimental prototypes to create a vehicle that can deliver resources to remote parts of the Brazilian rainforest.
He said this was a once in a lifetime opportunity that he would recommend to any fellow Aggies.
"We enjoyed our time here very much as we got to know people in the labs and all around campus. Everyone here at USP is very welcoming, both professors and random people on the streets, and we certainly established friendships that will last for a long while. The program also included technical visits to relevant industries nearby such as an Embraer aircraft manufacturing line, a maintenance hangar and a local agriculturally drone company."

Derek Wu '28 has spent the summer as a research intern at the University of Oxford studying transpiration cooling problems in hypersonic flow. The work he has done includes characterizing flow conditions, designed an experimental setup for current and voltage transducers and analyzing ablation of porous material under extreme heat flux and more.

Experiences like Derek's gives students the chance to explore possible career paths with hands on practice and make unforgettable memories in the process.
