The Aggie community is mourning the passing of Texas A&M University Professor Dr. Antony Jameson, who passed last Thursday at the age of 91.
Dr. Jameson is known as the father of computational modeling for the design of high-performance aircraft. The use of his codes led to a paradigm change from aircraft design-by-test to aircraft design-by-computation. They formed the basis for the design of numerous aircraft including the Airbus 310,320,330,340 and 380 as well as the Boeing 737-500,737-400, 737-700, 747-400, 757, 767, 777 and the 787.
He received his PhD from Cambridge University in 1963 and moved to the US in 1966, initially working with Grumman Aerospace Company. He transitioned to academia in 1972, serving as a faculty member at the New York University Courant Institute, Princeton University, and Stanford University before joining Texas A&M in 2018. His achievements have been celebrated all over the world, including honorary doctoral degrees from Uppsala University in Sweden and the Universitรฉ Pierre et Marie Curie in France and an Honorary Professorship from the Northwest Polytechnical University in China
Dr. Jameson has received many awards, including the Daniel Guggenheim Medal for lifetime achievement, the Elmer A. Sperry Award, the Gold Medal from the Royal Aeronautical Society, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AAIA) Fluid Dynamics Award, the Spirit of St. Louis Medal from the ASME, the John Von Neumann Medal from the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics and the Pendray Aerospace Literature Award. He was an Honorary Fellow of the AIAA, a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Foreign Member of the US National Academy of Engineering.
He leaves behind a legacy of great impact in the field of Aerospace Engineering and lifetime of research that affects everyone who has ever flown in an airplane. He will be remembered by the many faculty and students he inspired in life as well as his many friends and colleagues in the Aerospace community.
