Through the Donna Walker Faculty Fellowship, associate professor Dr. Astrid Layton is giving mechanical engineering students the opportunity to step outside the lab and share their work with the broader research community J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University

Dr. Layton uses the fellowship to support both undergraduate and graduate students in her Bio-Inspired Systems Lab. These funds allow her students to attend conferences to present their research, build networks, and gain new perspectives. Pepito Thelly '23, a doctoral student in Dr. Layton’s lab, recently traveled to Paris to attend the Design Theory Special Interest Group, where he presented his research on an international stage!

“Presenting our work at an international level is something I never imagined I’d be able to do during my Ph.D. I am incredibly grateful for both the opportunity and the support that made it possible.”

Light-Propelled Megajets Could Enable 20-Year Space Travel to Alpha Centauri 🪐

Dr. Shoufeng Lan and his team's research on metajets demonstrates full three-dimensional maneuverability, a capability not previously realized in optical propulsion systems. Their research has been featured on BBC Sky at Night Magazine, MSN, Innovation News Network, Starlust, IFL Science, ScienceMag, Interesting Engineering, and Gizmodo. Congratulations, Dr. Lan & team!

Light-Powered Propulsion Expands Space Exploration Possibilities 🔆 🛰️

Researchers at Texas A&M University have demonstrated a new approach to light-driven motion that shows lasers can be used to lift and steer objects in multiple directions without physical contact. This breakthrough may one day enable travel to Alpha Centauri — the closest star system to earth — within roughly 20 years.

The work, led Dr. Shoufeng Lan, mechanical engineering assistant professor and director of the Lán Laboratory for Advanced Nanophotonics, and his team is detailed in “Optical propulsion and levitation of metajets,” published in Newton by Cell Press. Doctoral students in Dr. Lan's group led both the design and experimental validation.
