Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Thomas G. Darling ’54, a decorated military hero and beloved former Commandant of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, was committed to the success of our students, our Cadets and our university. From his 33-year Air Force career to his nine years as our Commandant, Maj. Gen. Darling devoted his life to service and to developing leaders of character, a legacy that will live on.

Here.

Texas A&M mourns the recent passing of Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Thomas G. Darling ’54, a decorated military hero and beloved former Commandant of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. His 33-year Air Force career included more than 7,000 flight hours and numerous prestigious honors. As Commandant, he left an indelible mark on the university, and his legacy lives on through the Sanders Corps of Cadets Visitor Center he championed, the Darling Corps Recruiting Company named in his honor, and the countless cadets whose lives he shaped during and beyond his tenure.

He dedicated his post-military life to ensuring cadets had every opportunity to succeed, establishing academic support programs, formalizing recruiting efforts and initiating the Corps Hall of Honor program. General Darling was a true Aggie in every sense of the word, and his legacy will continue to shape the Corps for generations to come. Here.

Today, we remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Their courage and selflessness secured the freedoms we hold dear. On this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on their extraordinary dedication — and the loved ones who carry their legacy forward.

Today, we honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is not forgotten, and their legacy continues to shape the freedoms we share. From Texas A&M University, we reflect with gratitude and respect on this Memorial Day.

Congratulations to Lisa D. Cantu ’24 on being appointed the next student regent on The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents!

Lisa, a first-generation Aggie and Ph.D. student in educational administration, led my own family on a campus tour several years ago as a member of the Howdy Crew. We were truly blown away by her knowledge and her love for Texas A&M, and the care she had in leading our group. There is no doubt she’s been all in on the Aggie experience since day one and is genuinely committed to helping others get a glimpse of what makes Aggieland so special.

I can’t wait to see the positive impact she’ll continue to make as a student regent. Gig ’em, Lisa!

The Texas A&M University System has welcomed the appointment of Lisa D. Cantu of Mission, Texas, as the next student regent on the Board of Regents by Gov. Greg Abbott.

Cantu, a first-generation Aggie and doctoral student at Texas A&M University, is pursuing a Ph.D. in educational administration with an emphasis in educational leadership and policy. She earned both a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Master of Public Service and Administration from Texas A&M in 2024.

Cantu will serve a one-year term as student regent through May 31, 2027.

Thank you to the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences for welcoming me alongside Linda and Dennis Clark to see how this transformational project in Aggieland is already taking shape.

Walking into the Jack K. Williams Administration Building the last two days brought joy to my heart — and honestly, it just feels like home. There really aren’t enough words to express just how honored I am to serve as President of Texas A&M University.

I spent much of yesterday meeting with key groups across the university, including my office staff, the cabinet and deans. I also had the opportunity to stop by and visit with the newly formed Faculty Advisory Council. It was a meaningful first day back, and I’m looking forward to the important work ahead.

A Statement from Interim President Tommy Williams ’78 on the Texas A&M University Spring 2026 Course Review:

Yesterday, Texas A&M University completed our Spring course review to ensure compliance with the updated Texas A&M University System policies 08.01 and 12.01. Since late December, faculty and administrators have reviewed approximately 5,400 courses being taught this Spring. Most courses needing modification to come into compliance were resolved at the academic department level between faculty, department heads and deans. Six courses were canceled due to non-compliance.

This was a useful exercise conducted in collaboration with faculty over a compressed timeline. The rigor involved in this process not only corrects “drift” from learning outcomes but ensures course descriptions accurately reflect the content of the course. We are committed to continued oversight in the future.

Despite what many have said, this is not about censoring faculty or restricting academic freedom. Oversight and clarity are safeguards to protect educational quality. Relevance and restraint in the classroom with respect to controversial matters that have no bearing on the subject are essential to restoring public trust. I am pleased to report virtually none of that is occurring at Texas A&M as reflected in the small number of classes requiring cancellation.

I also directed the provost to wind down the Women’s and Gender Studies program due to low student interest in the program based on enrollment over the past several years and the difficulty of bringing the program in compliance with the new System policies. Teach out plans guarantee students in that program can complete their degrees or credentials.

Throughout this process our faculty and administration have been focused on supporting student success, which ensured no student was asked to change their degree or delay graduation as part of this review. That will remain our focus as we look forward.
