Wm Michael Barnes '64 Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University was established in 1940.

The Wm Michael Barnes '64 Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University provides education and research that contribute to the economic and technological advancement of the state, the nation and the world. It has consistently been ranked in the top 10 departments in the United States over the past 10 years by the Gourman Report, the National Research Council and US News and World Report. We provide education and research that contribute to the economic and technological advancement of the state, the nation and the world. Our outstanding faculty are nationally and internationally recognized for the quality of their research and teaching, and their leadership in the profession. We have strong programs in manufacturing and production systems, logistics and supply chain management, operations research, data science, applied probability and statistics, systems engineering, quality and reliability, and system simulation especially important in the current environment of international trade and global competition. On Friday, October 16, the council met with the Wm Michael Barnes ‘64 Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University in College Station. The council’s mission is to provide a continuing liaison between the department and the practicing profession to improve the quality of the industrial and systems engineering program at Texas A&M University.

Whether you’re an industry professional, a student, or a faculty member, the Advisory Council is one way ISEN keeps the profession and the classroom connected.

What the day covered:

*Department Updates: Dr. Satish Bukkapatnam, department head, shared updates on the undergraduate program, graduate program, research, website and communications, capstone, and development.

*Student Focus: Student outreach workshop discussions, student organization updates, a capstone and beyond session, and an IISE Student Chapter merch pop-up.

*What’s Next: The introduction of the Applied Research and Outreach Hub (AROH) and a discussion on restructuring the ISEN council, plus a C&J BBQ lunch with faculty, staff, and students.

Why be in ETB 1034 on Friday, October 23? Because a Texas A&M industrial engineering doctoral graduate is sharing research on making complex ceramic parts at scale.

The ISEN Seminar Series welcomes Dr. Wenchao “Mark” Du, Materials Engineer in the Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He will present “Additive Manufacturing of Silicon-Carbide-Based Materials for Advanced Thermal Systems” from 1:50–2:40 p.m.

Why it matters: binder jet additive manufacturing offers a promising pathway for producing complex ceramic components at scale, but high-quality parts require careful control of the powder feedstock, printing, and post-processing. Dr. Du will discuss how printing parameters relate to green-part quality, dimensional accuracy, and densification. He will also highlight micro-architected composite structures built on silicon carbide, an approach that enables new opportunities to tailor mechanical, thermal, and functional properties beyond those achievable with conventional monolithic ceramics.

Dr. Du’s work bridges materials engineering with industrial applications, including heat transfer components and high-performance ceramic systems. He has been recognized with the Impact Argonne Award for Innovation and the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from SME, and he earned his doctorate in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2021.

This Friday, the ISEN Seminar Series welcomes Dr. Saber Hussain of the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Dr. Hussain, RH Senior International Focal Point Lead in the Human Effectiveness Directorate, 711 HPW, will present “Overview of Human Effectiveness Directorate: Accelerating Biosystems Engineering” on Friday, October 16, from 1:50–2:40 p.m. in ETB 1034.

His talk will explore how academic collaboration drives next-generation human augmentation, with key technology areas including nanotechnology safety, biophotonics, wearable sensing, and artificial intelligence-enabled tools. Dr. Hussain is a Fellow of the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Society of Toxicology, and has authored and co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications.

Join us this afternoon for the ISEN Seminar Series.

Dr. Siqian Shen, Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, will present “Multi-Source Stochastic Optimization: Methods and Applications” today, Friday, October 9, from 1:50–2:40 p.m. in ETB 1034.

Dr. Shen’s talk explores how to make better decisions under uncertainty when data comes from multiple sources of varying accuracy, with applications including wildfire control and emergency resource allocation. Her research focuses on stochastic and robust optimization, integer programming, and network optimization. She also served as a Program Director at the NSF CMMI division from 2023 to 2025.
