Texas A&M Physics and Astronomy While graduate students are much of the impetus behind our outstanding research, most of our undergraduates also participate in research projects.

Offering firm foundations and flexible degree plans as we open minds to the frontiers of scientific knowledge in the areas of astronomy and atomic, optics, condensed matter, high energy, nuclear, and applied physics. Our award-winning faculty includes two Nobel laureate, four National Academy of Sciences members, and eight distinguished professors, as well as many internationally decorated scholars and researchers. Congratulations to Texas A&M physicist Rainer J. Fries on being named a 2026 Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS)! 🎉

A professor in Texas A&M Physics and Astronomy, Fries was selected by the APS Division of Nuclear Physics for his foundational contributions to understanding how quarks combine to form hadrons in high energy nuclear collisions.

His groundbreaking theoretical work has helped advance our understanding of quark-gluon plasma, an extraordinary state of matter that existed in the early universe.

Congratulations, Dr. Fries, on this well deserved recognition!
