HMGT 426 Sustainable Tourism Field Trip to Galveston, Texas!
On October 7, 2026, students from Dr. Jinyang Deng's HMGT 426 Sustainable Tourism class enjoyed a wonderful field trip to Galveston, Texas, exploring the connections between nature-based tourism, heritage tourism and sustainable destination management.
During the trip, students had the opportunity to meet and learn from local leaders and tourism professionals, including:
Alyson Poston, President, East End Historic District Association
John Paul Listowski, newly elected Mayor of Galveston
Kyle O'Haver, Superintendent, Galveston Island State Park
Brett Delk, Assistant Superintendent, Galveston Island State Park
The trip provided valuable firsthand insights into historic preservation, coastal ecosystem conservation and sustainable tourism development. It was an excellent experiential learning opportunity that connected classroom concepts with real-world issues.

HMGT faculty and graduate students came together for the Pineapple Splash Bash to connect, share stories and make meaningful memories beyond the classroom. At HMGT, hospitality is more than what we study. It’s about fostering a sense of belonging and making everyone feel at home.

What a fantastic start to the semester for the department!
The Opening Doors Career Fair brought together more than 300 students and 30+ industry vendors for an afternoon of networking, career exploration and professional development.
A sincere thank you to all of our industry partners for joining us and supporting our students. We are especially grateful to the vendors who hosted mock interviews, providing students with valuable opportunities to practice their professional skills, receive feedback and build confidence.
These meaningful industry connections play an important role in preparing our students for successful careers in hospitality. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success!
