The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Meat Judging Team wrapped up another week of learning, growth, and competing at the American Royal!

We’re proud of the hard work and determination this group continues to demonstrate, with several students earning individual honors in both the American Royal and Alternate Meat Judging Contests

It’s been an awesome few weeks leading up to the American Royal, and the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Meat Judging Team is ready to compete!

Our team has been blessed with tremendous support, valuable learning opportunities, and a great week of practice as we prepare to represent Texas A&M tomorrow!

A special thank you to Shawn Harris, Jennifer Wahrmund Wyle, and Lily Ford for providing breakfast, sharing their knowledge, and offering valuable feedback to our team!

We’re also incredibly grateful to Dr. Shannon Norris Parish for taking the time to visit with our students about teamwork, perspective, and the importance of giving your best in everything you do. We are fortunate to have such dedicated leaders, professors, and alumni who are willing to invest their time and pour into us!

Our travels this week began with a tour at empirical foods in Garden City, followed by valuable practice opportunities at Nebraska Beef and Dakota City, along with a great workout at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Along the way, we’ve managed to squeeze in team dinners, group runs, plenty of laughs, and memories that will last well beyond the contest.

We’re proud of the work this team has put in and excited to see them give it their all tomorrow!

It’s been an exciting week for our graduate assistant coaches, and we have another accomplishment to celebrate!

Congratulations to Morgan McKinzie on successfully defending her master’s thesis!

Her research, titled “Postmortem Chilling Rate and Aging Time Affect Metabolic Processes in Beef Loins,” reflects countless hours of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Morgan was a member of the 2022 National Champion Meat Judging Team and continues to share her knowledge and experience as a coach for the 2026 Fightin’ Texas Aggie Meat Judging Team.

We’re grateful for the passion, positivity, and laughter she brings to our program.

Both Morgan and Nathan were under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Chris Kerth. We are extremely grateful for his leadership and being flexible with their busy judging schedules!

Congratulations to our very own, Nathan Barrett, on successfully defending his thesis yesterday, entitled “Finishing Regime Impacts on Carcass and Meat Quality of Lamb”

Nathan was on the 2022 National Championship Meat Judging Team and currently is serving as an assistant coach for the 2026 Meat Judging Team. We are grateful for Nathan’s passion and dedication to student success!

Our team rounded out a wonderful trip out East with a day in the Big Apple! 🗽

We took in many of the iconic sights, experienced a glimpse of life in New York City, and made a few more memories together.

Experiences like these are about so much more than the places we visit. They challenge our perspectives, expose us to new people and ways of life, and give us an opportunity to reflect on and appreciate the many blessings we have around us each day.

We’re incredibly grateful for an amazing trip and all the people who helped make it possible.

Now, it’s back to work! We’re looking forward to hitting the road again in a few weeks for the American Royal.

The team showed a lot of improvement today and finished 4th Overall at the Eastern National Meat Judging Contest! We’re proud of the progress this group continues to make and excited about the momentum they’re building.

There’s still work to do, but this group took another big step forward today. We’re proud of the way they competed and represented Texas A&M!

Another great day of touring, learning, and exploring Pennsylvania for the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Meat Judging Team!

We started the morning with a great tour at Clemens Food Group, where the team had the opportunity to learn more about pork processing, value-added meat products, and career opportunities within the meat industry. A big thank you to the Clemens team for taking the time to host us and share their knowledge!

From there, we made our way to Shady Maple Smorgasbord—the largest buffet in the USA—and it’s safe to say we got our fill! We finished the day with a quick stop in Hershey to explore and satisfy our sweet tooth.

It’s been an awesome few days filled with great industry experiences, plenty of good food, and even better memories as a team.

Now it’s time to compete! The team is excited, prepared, and ready to give it their best tomorrow!

The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Meat Judging Team has made its way to Pennsylvania and is getting ready to compete at the Eastern National this Saturday!

Our trip started in Corpus Christi with a great stop at STX Beef. A special thank you to their team for welcoming us and helping us kick off the trip! We’re also incredibly grateful to the Harborth Family for providing us with a place to stay, relax, and enjoy some quality time together as a team.

From there, we flew into Philadelphia and have made the most of our time in Pennsylvania! We’ve seen the Liberty Bell, toured Marcho Farms to learn more about lamb and veal processing, enjoyed a veal Parmesan sandwich, and, of course, couldn’t visit Philly without a cheesesteak. A big thank you to Angelo’s for one of the best!

It’s already been a great trip filled with industry experiences, team memories, and plenty of good food. We’re looking forward to what the rest of the trip has in store!

The 2026 Fightin’ Texas Aggie Meat Judging Team had a great summer grading trip!

The team got back in the swing of things at Tyson Amarillo and Cargill Friona, where they toured the facility and gained valuable insight to the industry. They also took some time to enjoy a Panhandle sunset at Palo Duro Canyon.

A special thank you to the Hinds and Detten families for hosting the team for dinner and supporting our students.

As you see this team traveling throughout the year, you’ll notice a new stickers on their hard hats. At every contest, practice, and trip, we’ll be honoring our teammate Avery Detten as we continue to Love Like Avery.

Best of luck to these Aggies as they start a new school year. We’re excited for what’s ahead!
