We're kicking things off this Friday at 4:00pm in OMB 112 with Dr. John Shaw, Vice Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arkansas.

Dr. Shaw will be giving a fascinating talk over "Platforms in River Delta Elevation Profiles." We hope to see you all there!

After initial setbacks in engineering, Colby Coppinger (GIST '25) found a new path in Texas A&M's Department of Geography, where he turned his passion for technology into a successful cybersecurity career while making an impact through leadership, research, and service. Today we honor and remember the life and legacy of Dr. Sarah Bednarz, Professor Emerita at the Texas A&M University Department of Geography.

A respected scholar and leader in geography education, Dr. Bednarz's work focused on spatial thinking, geography education, and geospatial technologies. Through her research, leadership, and service to the profession, she helped shape the future of geography education and inspired generations of students and educators.

Dr. Bednarz began teaching geography courses at Texas A&M in 1989 and formally joined the faculty as an assistant professor in 1995, serving until her retirement and appointment as Professor Emerita in 2016. Her dedication to education, mentorship, and academic excellence left a lasting impact on students, faculty, and staff.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, former students, and colleagues. Her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched and the contributions she made.

We are incredibly proud to have sent 56 new geographers into the world with their GEOG/GIST B.S. degrees at yesterday's bachelor's degree commencement, and our four new PhDs who will be hooded at tonight's doctoral commencement: Dr. Mengqu Han, Dr. Kourtney Higgins, Dr. Lauren Nyquist, and Dr. Mingzheng Yang! 🎓🧑‍⚕️🥳

Yesterday evening, the Department of Geography hosted a dinner and awards ceremony honoring our graduating seniors. A special congratulations to our Outstanding Student Award recipients—Gabrielle Hamill and Dalton Peterson—as well as our Gamma Theta Upsilon inductees and all 56 GEOG, GIST, and USGE majors who will earn their Bachelor of Science degrees at next Friday’s spring graduation ceremony 🎓✨
