Ursinus College Music Department You don't have to be a Music major to perform at Ursinus College.

Our students consider their participation in one of the college's many music ensembles, both vocal and instrumental, as one of their most treasured college experiences. Opportunities to perform and tour, as well as visits and master classes with professional musicians, make Ursinus an exciting place to get involved in music. Students are offered numerous opportunities to express themselves and to develop their musical talents, and can choose minor concentrations in music theory or music history. Whether your interest is instrumental or vocal, you will find a home in the Ursinus Music Department, and might one day find yourself touring with the Meistersingers in Europe (or singing the National Anthem at a Philadelphia Phillies game), playing alongside a guest artist with the jazz ensemble or doing a command performance at a campus event.

On APEX Day, we were thrilled to spotlight the winners of this year’s Robert Rifkin Prize in music composition!

🥇 Leah Smith ‘27 – Rifkin Prize Winner
🎶 Ben Focht ‘27 – Runner-Up
🎶 Gabe Krolikowski ‘28 – Runner-Up

Established through a bequest from Andrew R. Rifkin ‘74, the Rifkin Prize recognizes the best original music composition by an Ursinus student or alum. Leah, Ben, and Gabe shared their work and the stories behind it, a perfect fit for a day all about students exploring their paths and where their passions can take them.

🏆🎶 Congratulations, Dr. Andrew Davis! 🎶🏆

We’re so proud to share that Dr. Andrew Davis has been awarded First Prize in the 2026 Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition Award from the University of Illinois School of Music for his piece Deep Summer Folklore!

The Martirano Award is an international competition open to composers of any age or nationality. Entries are submitted anonymously and judged by a panel of composers and faculty from the University of Illinois, Washington University in St. Louis, and Princeton University.

As part of the honor, Deep Summer Folklore was performed by the Illinois Modern Ensemble at the Martirano Award Concert on October 7 in the Foellinger Great Hall at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Dr. Davis was there to hear it live and was celebrated at a reception afterward

Join us Sunday, September 27 at 4 p.m. in Bomberger Hall as the Curtis Institute of Music Organ Studio brings a program of stunning range — from Bach's Prelude in E-flat Major to Naji Hakim's playful "Gershwinesca" — performed by students of renowned organist Alan Morrison on our beloved Heefner Memorial Austin Organ.

Did you know Ursinus's own College Organist, Alan Morrison, also heads the Organ Department at the Curtis Institute of Music?

On Sunday, September 27 at 4 p.m., that connection comes to life in Bomberger Hall as students from Morrison's Curtis studio take the bench of our Heefner Memorial Austin Organ for a special recital.

Curtis's organ program traces back to legends like Lynnwood Farnam and Alexander McCurdy, and its alumni now hold posts at places like the Washington National Cathedral and the Mormon Tabernacle. Come hear the next generation of that tradition, right here at Ursinus.

🎶 NEW MUSIC ALERT 🎶

Huge congratulations to PIKNIK on the release of their debut album, Mesh — out now! 🎉

PIKNIK features Ursinus's own Gabriel Krolikowski '28 (Drums, Vocals) and Tyler Broughton '29 (Rhythm Guitar, Vocals), alongside bandmates Jacob Givens (Lead Guitar, Vocals) and Kenny Stanko (Bass, on the album recording — current bassist is Zack Reese).

The entire album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Tyler himself in collaboration with Jacob — with multiple singers and songwriters coming together across all 12 tracks.

This project is a true testament to the Ursinus Music Department: Tyler and Gabe first connected here during their freshman year, Tyler built his production skills through our Music Tech courses, and our MxD Recording Studio even hosted sessions recording double bass for a string quintet on the tracks "It's No Use" and "Life, Born Again."

Kick off the Fall 2026 concert season with us! Join us Sunday, September 27 at 4 p.m. in Bomberger Hall for a recital by the Curtis Institute of Music Organ Studio, featuring students of Alan Morrison performing on our magnificent Heefner Memorial Austin Organ.

The program spans centuries and styles — from Bach and Franck to Nico Muhly and Naji Hakim — showcasing the extraordinary talent coming out of one of the world's most celebrated conservatories.
