Our teachers bring learning to life through experiential education, project-based learning, real-world field experiences, and student-centered classroom practices. In addition to teaching, faculty members serve as advisors, club sponsors, and active contributors to our vibrant school community.

Roles & Responsibilities:
Teach introductory and AP level History, Geography, and Political Science
Teach five sections each semester
Serve as an Advisor for up to 10 9th-12th grade students, providing guidance in academic, extracurricular, social, and personal development, and acting as a primary liaison with families
Participate in off-campus experiences, including overnight stays during our Experience-Centered Seminars and Mountain Caravan
Co-lead an intensive three-week Experience-Centered Seminar in March
Design and implement engaging, differentiated, and globally informed curriculum using project-based learning, hands-on investigation, and iterative learning practices
Foster a positive, inclusive classroom culture that supports both academic growth and student well-being
Provide timely, constructive feedback and maintain accurate records of student progress, including grades, comments, and advisor communications
Communicate regularly with students and families regarding progress and concerns
Collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to department and school-wide initiatives
Attend all required faculty, department, and school meetings
Supervise students and uphold school policies
Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
Demonstrated content knowledge and passion for history education
Experience teaching or working with young people
Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and willingness to drive a 15-passenger vehicle
Ability to supervise students during multi-day and overnight trips
Proficiency with Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in relevant field
Experience teaching advanced or AP-level courses
Experience teaching students in grades 9-12
Independent school experience
Background in project-based and/or experiential learning

Salary and Benefits:
Employment at The Colorado Springs School includes a competitive benefits package, including a 403(b) retirement plan, medical, dental, and supplemental insurance options.
The salary range for this position is $47,000-$55,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.

Earlier this summer, Department Chair Dr. Tina Valtierra led eleven of our outstanding Education students on a study abroad experience in Granada, Spain, focused on International and Multicultural Teaching and Learning.

Throughout the program, students critically examined international educational contexts through the lenses of emancipatory pedagogies, transformative frameworks, and decolonial instructional practices. By visiting schools, learning centers, and community respite organizations across southern Spain, they engaged with educators and community members, gaining firsthand insight into culturally responsive, globally informed, and equity-centered approaches to teaching and learning.

This experience challenged students to deepen their understanding of education as a vehicle for social change while considering how global perspectives can strengthen their own teaching practices.

We look forward to seeing how they carry these insights into their future classrooms and communities. Thank you IES Granada for helping make this class so meaningful for our students!

Shannon Mello MAT '11 is a featured artist at this year's Green Box Arts Festival in Green Mountain Falls, CO. Her painting 'Weight of the Sky' will be on display through October, 2026. If you're in the area, don't miss the festival, which runs through July 19, 2026. Congratulations Shannon!

In April, Shannon Mello’s solo exhibition, What I Pick Up Along the Way, covered the walls at Colorado Springs’ Auric Gallery with artificial stones.

Using woodworking tools, Mello shaped and sanded two hundred plywood panels, then coated them in layers of paint, wax, and resin to create abstract encaustic forms inspired by the kind of river-smoothed rocks a child might collect from the ground.

For her next work, Mello looked up.

Mello is a featured visual artist at Green Box Arts Festival, July 4-19, 2026, in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado.

Her oil painting ‘Weight of the Sky’ (pictured) is inspired by the light beneath looming storm clouds, and will remain on view at Green Box's Lake Street Display through October.

“Colorado weather has a physical presence that I never experienced growing up in Michigan, storms here don’t just pass through, they take over,” Mello says in the festival program. “And when the light breaks at the horizon like that, right at the edge of something heavy, I have to paint it.”
