The Feminist & Gender Studies Program fosters inquiry into structures and modes of power as they are mediated by gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity, class, caste, nation and citizenship, age, and ability. Through teaching, scholarship, and service, we study and develop critical interdisciplinary and feminist theories and practices in collaboration with artists, activists, and scholars at Colorado College and beyond. Feminist & Gender Studies aims to embody a feminist ethos of critical engagement and responsiveness that is attentive to shifting relations of power; to be an intellectual, political, and creative space for the pursuit of exemplary collaborative initiatives locally, regionally, nationally, and transnationally; and to remain conversant with myriad intellectual legacies while reimagining the possibilities of feminist knowledge and practice.

The Feminist & Gender Studies Department is excited to invite you to the opening of "CC's Feminist Ancestors," an exhibit celebrating the work of three professors emeriti: Judith "Judy" Genova, Margaret "Margi" Duncombe, and Adrienne Lanier Seward. Judy was one of the earliest directors of Women's Studies; Adrienne was the first black woman to be tenured at CC; and Margi was one of the first openly le***an faculty members on campus and was instrumental in establishing CC's original Gay and Le***an Alliance. These faculty members worked for decades to establish not only the Women's Studies Program but also to push CC to acknowledge and uplift issues of gender and sexuality for students, faculty, and the institution as a whole. We at FGS are proud to inherit their legacy and eager to honor and share their work with you!

The reception will be held during Homecoming weekend on Friday, Oct. 9th, from 1pm to 3pm in the Interdisciplinary Studies (ID) House, located at 1115 N. Cascade Ave. Refreshments will be provided. The FGS Free Library aims to inspire and support the intellectual curiosities of folks in the Colorado College and Colorado Springs communities. Each block, an FGS department faculty member will donate books from their collection that resonate with the course they’re teaching. Community members can then take a book or two at time, for free! While you don’t have to give a book, if you do take one, we would appreciate your donations of books pertaining to Feminist and Gender Studies. As Toni Morrison notes, “Books are a form of political action. Books are knowledge. Books are reflection. Books change your mind.” This project was initiated by Dr. Heidi R. Lewis.

This block, Dr. Joana Chavez has graciously shared books related to her current course, FG206: Chicana & Latina Feminisms
(Topics in FGS). This course introduces the student to the rich field of Chicana feminist thought by examining its emergence from social movements; its diversification and alliance with third world and transnational feminisms; its theoretical developments in scholarship and the arts; and its movement into contemporary social, artistic, and political spaces. The course will privilege the approach of thinking about Chicana feminist thought and praxis as movida or movement to consider how feminism, in general, and Chicana feminism, in particular, has and continues to inform our conceptualizations of power, gender, sexuality, identity, and society.

The Rag is the FGS student publication that showcases critical essays, poetry, creative writing, editorials, and other content relevant to feminist analysis, interests, and ideas. We welcome submissions from everyone in the CC community.

We are currently seeking applicants for the role of The Rag Co-Editor & Coordinator. The Rag Co-Editors & Coordinators will ensure content is submitted by The Rag student team and other members of the CC community in a timely manner and consistent with the editorial expectations of The Rag, as well as ensuring a consistent, cohesive, twice-a-semester publication. (Please note that students are not required to be an FGS major or minor to apply; you need only have a demonstrated interest in the field.)

Another Summer ‘26 dispatch from FGS! Professor Heidi R. Lewis hosted a hugely successful writing retreat titled “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Proposal?”. Here’s more about it in her own words, “Upon approaching then becoming a Full Professor just over two years ago, I began thinking about ways to leverage that power and privilege in service to folks we often refer to as “junior” scholars.

One opportunity to realize that vision came when I was named Series Editor for Expanding Frontiers, a University of Nebraska Press book series. I accepted that role because we focus on encouraging, supporting, and mentoring first-time BIPoC and LGBTQIA+ scholars especially by demystifying the publishing process and helping them develop proposals.

Shortly after, I decided to deepen those commitments by inaugurating Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Proposal?: Two Intensive Academic Writing Retreats with Dr. Heidi R. Lewis. Through writing workshops, independent writing blocks, accountability partnerships, and a 1:1 meeting with me, these retreats support scholars developing academic book proposals in Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies and kin disciplines like Black Studies and Disability Studies.

The inaugural in-person retreat I hosted this summer was not without struggle, but it was undeniably phenomenal. We collectively learned and grew in ways I both did and did not anticipate. I couldn’t agree more with participant Dr. Samina Gul Ali, who noted, “This experience will hold a special place in my heart for a long time!”

So what do FGS faculty members get up to during the summer? Well, other than following the Men's Football World Cup, Professor Nadia Guessous participated in a roundtable discussion in Rabat, Morocco on June 11, 2026 on feminism and anti-Muslim racism alongside other feminist scholars. The roundtable was part of a series of events that Prof. Guessous helped organize with local Moroccan scholars and public intellectuals on decolonizing feminism. The series included six talks between April and June 2026 that were held at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the HEM Research Center in Morocco.
Her talk this June enabled the audience to reflect on the challenges of enacting a decolonial feminist politics in an era of rising anti-Muslim racism, in which questions of gender and sexuality are often used to deflect attention away from violence and brutality.
Her visit also allowed her to strengthen her ties with other intellectuals working to decolonize knowledge in Morocco and its many diasporas. When you see her in a couple weeks, be sure to ask her about her exciting trip, and stay for her hot takes on the Moroccan football team!

Nan Lanier (Psychology Major and FGS Minor ’20) Graduates with Dual Master’s Degrees in Social Work and Couple & Family Therapy from University of Louisville

The Feminist & Gender Studies Department is excited to announce that Nan Lanier (Psychology Major and FGS Minor ’20) has graduated with dual master’s degrees in Social Work and Couple & Family Therapy from the University of Louisville as of May 2026! Nan has also accepted a position as an associate therapist at Best Life Mental Health Services, a group practice in her hometown of Louisville, KY.

Best Life believes that “There are no perfect people, and we embrace our flaws and diversity – and use all of our practice wisdom, life experience, and clinical research to aid our clients in truly discovering their best selves.” As an associate therapist at Best Life, Nan will work primarily with individuals leaving the carceral system on parole, focusing on reintegration support and healing racial trauma from policing and institutionalization.

Having returned to her hometown to work in her communities of origin, Nan says, “I am excited and daunted to continue working system-impacted and clients of color at Best Life, many of whose lived experiences differ from my own. I also hope to continue working with q***r youth and their families, as well as with divorcing families trying to mitigate the impact of the legal system. I am grateful to the FGS department for my politics, and for bell hooks.”

The Feminist & Gender Studies Department is excited to announce Dr. Melissa L. Durland (FGS and Psychology ’15), Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington (UW), was appointed Director of Psychological Services and Training Center (PSTC) this past summer!

The PSTC offers low-cost, high-quality, time-limited, evidence-based assessment and treatment to the UW and Seattle metropolitan communities. It is also the primary training center for doctoral students in the UW Clinical Psychology Program, with mental health services provided by advanced graduate students under the supervision of licensed mental health professionals.

On her new role, Dr. Durland notes, “One of the great things about earning a clinical psychology doctoral degree is the flexibility the training gives us in our careers. I have intentionally sought a career in which I can do it all: clinical work, research, teaching/supervision, and advocacy/policy work. As the Director of the PSTC, I truly get to do it all, and I’m loving it! It has been absolutely wonderful getting to know everyone and it is an honor to train my first cohort of students.”
