“I didn’t become a nurse until two weeks before I turned 38,” Braxton said. “Before that, I was blue collar. I did a lot of landscaping, window washing, pressure washing, stuff like that in Florida. I owned a landscaping business, and then I asked myself the hard question, which a lot of people won’t do: Do I want to do this when I’m in my 50s? And the answer immediately that I spoke in my own head was no.”

Braxton Newton, MSN, RN, PMHNP-BC, graduated with his Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in spring 2026. Click the link below to hear about his path to nursing!

Meet Martha Rosenau, a proud alumna who has spent more than 20 years mentoring the next generation of registered dietitians.

As a member of the first dietetics cohort at UCCS, Martha has remained deeply connected to the program by welcoming students into her practice and helping them build the skills, confidence, and clinical experience needed to succeed.

Her commitment to mentoring future healthcare professionals continues to make a lasting impact on both our students and the Colorado Springs community.

This month, our accelerated BSN public health nursing students took their classroom learning into the community to advocate for healthier families. Focused on rising childhood obesity rates in southeast Colorado Springs, the students conducted a community health assessment, engaged local stakeholders, completed a windshield survey, and engaged city council constituent, Sam Friedman, to learn the process of public health advocacy.

The students compiled their findings into an executive summary and presented it to the City's Board of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services in June, bringing visibility to the need for safe, accessible crosswalks that connect families to parks, trails, and recreation.

At our Simulation Learning Center, we prepare future nurses for more than clinical skills. We help them develop empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the patients they will serve.

Through our Poverty Simulation, Accelerated BSN students step into the challenges faced by individuals and families living with limited resources. Students navigate real-life scenarios involving food assistance, social services, childcare, employment, and community agencies while working together as family units.

This immersive experience highlights the barriers many patients face every day and helps students better understand the frustration, stress, and resilience that can accompany financial hardship.

A huge thank you to our students, faculty, staff, and volunteer actors who helped create this meaningful and impactful learning experience.
