We had a fantastic visit to the Engineering labs with Dr. Juan Caicedo, who generously took time to walk our team through the innovative research happening across multiple labs. His insights, and the opportunity to meet his business manager, helped strengthen connections between the Controller’s Office and departmental business teams, putting faces to names and building relationships that will support future collaboration.

For our Grants and Funds Management team, this experience was especially valuable. Seeing firsthand how reviewed and approved expenses directly support sponsored research brought meaningful context to the work we do every day.

We also had the chance to chat with Bennett, an engineering student working on a concrete canoe for the ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition. His enthusiasm and willingness to share his work made the visit even more memorable. They won 3rd place! Go Captain Cocky!

The Controller’s Office has once again earned the GFOA Certificate of Achievement in Financial Reporting for our ACFR, recognizing excellence across all areas of review. With so many recent changes in financial reporting and compliance, this honor is especially meaningful.

This achievement reflects the professionalism, dedication, and integrity of our reporting team, who continue to uphold the highest standards while serving as responsible stewards of the University’s financial resources.

As we prepare for upcoming capital financing bond issuances, their work ensures our financial reporting remains strong, reliable, and transparent.

Congratulations to the entire team on this well-deserved recognition!

A few weeks ago, the Controller’s Office came together for our Internal Conference Day 2026: Grow Together, Succeed Together

We were honored to have Ed Walton, Executive Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer, kick off this year’s conference by recognizing the hard work our team puts into producing clean and accurate financial reports and by sharing his positive perspective on USC’s current leadership and direction. His remarks set an energizing tone for the day ahead.

The morning sessions gave our staff the opportunity to learn from one another, as well as from the Bursar’s Office, Just FOIA, and our Principal Investigators sharing insights, expertise, and perspectives that strengthen how we work together.

In the afternoon, our team partnered with Organizational Excellence for a hands-on process improvement session. Building on last year’s high-level presentation, we worked in small groups using simple yet powerful tools to make problem-solving clearer, faster, and more effective.

We wrapped up the day with Student Health and Well-Being, focusing on the importance of nutrition, exercise, self-care, and sleep in maintaining energy and focus.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and took time out of their busy schedules to create meaningful learning opportunities for our team. Your contributions are truly appreciated.

And a special thank you to our team leader, Mandy Kibler, for championing growth and professional development and for fostering such a positive, growth-minded culture within our team.

This dedicated team works hard to make sure every Gamecock gets paid! We are so grateful for their commitment, as they average 14,000 paychecks a pay period with an average of 9,000 employees with one or more deductions.

Meet the Compliance Team: Lindsey Cox, Shannon Nickens, Rachel Goode, and Lisa Sipe!

With their collaborative, caring, and hardworking approach, they’ve led the recent updates to university policies and procedures. Yesterday, we wrapped up our webinar series highlighting these changes - and it’s only fitting to close by celebrating the team who made it possible. They also support USC’s research activities through management of subrecipient monitoring and invoicing processes.

We’re grateful for their expertise and dedication in keeping USC aligned with federal, state, local, and administrative regulations.

The Controller’s Office is proud to share that our recent book drive collected 196 books for Cocky’s Reading Express! Cocky’s Reading Express is more than just a literacy program, it’s a tradition that brings joy, excitement, and the love of reading to children across South Carolina. Every book collected helps put a story in the hands of a young reader, sparking imagination and opening doors to lifelong learning.

We’re grateful to our team for coming together to make this drive such a success, and we’re honored to support a program that reflects the heart of the Carolina community.

From lending a hand during Move-In to welcoming students on the First Day of Class as Gamecock Greeters, we love being involved in campus life and helping students feel at home at Carolina. Some of our team even volunteered on Saturday during Move-In and again on FDOC to support our students. We are proud to be part of the Carolina community this year and every year!
