It is with great sadness and profound pride, we honor the life and legacy of John Carpenter. John was a valued member of the USC geology faculty from 1966 to his retirement in 2000. He came to USC as a geochemist, but he soon found his passion and calling in the classroom, where he worked primarily in geoscience education with a focus on teacher training. In 1983, John founded the Center for Science Education (CSE) in the USC College of Science and Math. In 1984, John became the Center’s first director. It was a position he held until shortly before his retirement. In those years, John helped to establish the field of geoscience education research, which was an early form of the broader modern field we now call “discipline-based” educational research (DBER). John graduated some of the first, if not the first, graduate students in the field, establishing USC as an early leader in DBER. In 1998, John received the Neil Miner Award, which is bestowed annually in recognition of exceptional contributions in Earth science education by the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. John was also presented an award for Distinguished Contributions to Earth Science Education at the geoscience education conference held in Sydney, Australia in 2000. John stayed active in his retirement, founding an external consulting group for science and math education projects and authoring "The Way the World Works: As Partially Figured out By John R. Carpenter." He continued to mentor teachers and faculty even in his final days. His early recognition of the need to support K-12 teachers developing a deeper understanding of geology and science work continues today as the CSE continues to support teaching professional development, STEM competitions, and connections with the College of Education. John was perhaps most importantly known as a source of friendship, inspiration, and guidance throughout his time at USC. He is fondly remembered by all who knew him and will be sorely missed.

The memorial service for John Carpenter has been scheduled for 11am on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 735 Old Lexington Hwy, Chapin, SC 29036.
