The Betsy Blackmon Dance Company comes to the Center for the Arts November 5-6 for our Fall Concert, which will also commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Dance at USC! We’ll be performing the iconic ballet “Pas de Quatre,” a work that was included in the repertory for the very first USC Dance concert in May of 1976; premiere works from Distinguished Artist-in-Residence Kathryn Morgan and Assistant Professor Aaron Wood; and excerpts from José Limón’s seminal work, “A Choreographic Offering.”

In preparation for the upcoming production of the 17th-century romantic adventure The Courage to Right a Woman's Wrongs, the show's cast recently got an incredible opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop on rapier swordplay with Bo Davis and Matt Daymiel of Carolina Historical Fencing Association. We learned mechanics, terminology, safety, and the intricate dance of sword combat. See the results in the show's thrilling fight scenes when it opens November 13 at Longstreet Theatre!

“What's that saying about 10-minute plays? If you don't like what's happening, just wait 10 minutes and it's going to change.” That's how theatre professor Lauren Wilson sums up the fun of seeing our "10 Minute Play Festival," happening October 29 - November 1 at Benson Theatre. Six original short plays, each developed from a playwriting course Wilson taught in the spring, will share the stage, spanning drama, wild comedy and lots of unexpected surprises.

"They’re all good plays— funny, charming, and irreverent,” she says. “These plays go deep into things the students care about, with heart and a great sense of humor."

Assistant Professor Erik Flatmo recently shared photos from his Scenic Painting for the Stage class, whose 13 students' first assignment was to find examples of brick on USC buildings, photograph and then recreate them with paint using techniques learned in class. This is some campus brickwork you can't trip on!

It's opening night for WITCH at Benson Theatre! In Jen Silverman's modern adaptation of the 17th tragicomedy "The Witch of Edmonton," a conniving devil arrives in a village eager to trade innermost desires for eternal damnation. But he meets his match in Elizabeth Sawyer, a woman falsely exiled for being a witch who turns the tables on her tempter.

Playwright Jen Silverman’s WITCH, opening this Friday at Benson Theatre, is adapted from a 1621 play, "The Witch of Edmonton," that claimed to be based on the story of a real woman exiled (and executed) for engaging with the occult. Silverman's modern adaptation uses that basis to explore how society can "other" us all. In an interview with Geffen Playhouse, Silverman said:

“Most of the plays I encountered from that time period that dealt with witches were essentially propaganda plays: they instructed people on what to do if they had a witch in their midst. 'The Witch of Edmonton' is the only one I found that boldly announces to the audience that it is going to do this exact thing, and then does entirely the opposite. It says, ‘This is a play about how evil and awful witches are and how the good folk are being led astray.” But then, in the first scene, you meet a woman who isn’t a witch at all — she only becomes one because she is so reviled.’”
