It’s been a busy semester for Scenic Design Asst. Professor Erik Flatmo (), head of our MFA in Scenic Design program. In addition to his tireless work bringing the world of “The Antelope Party” to life at Drayton Hall this month, he recently contributed scenic elements to the full-length original ballet “Let the Light Pour In,” choreographed by Betsy Blackmon Dance Program alum Caitlin McCormack Phibbs ('12), Artistic Director of Augusta’s Colton Ballet Company. Erik designed unique 13-foot high trees which moved throughout the ballet, which was inspired by the hopeful poetry of Lemn Sissay. As if that weren’t enough for one designer, his impressive scenery for Opera San José’s current production of “La Traviata” can be seen through May 3. Check out photos below.

Congratulations on all your success, Erik!

Wow! On this day in 1976, the very first performance of the USC Dance Company happened in the auditorium of USC's Booker T. Washington building. Directed by dance program founder Susan Anderson (née Earle), the concert repertory included six works of modern dance, tap and ballet, which a review in Daily Gamecock said "covered the spectrum of dance."

50 years later, the newly-named Betsy Blackmon Dance Program has become one of the top college dance programs in the country, and the Betsy Blackmon Dance Company continues to present the full spectrum of dance to our audience, more than living up to the "promise of being a dynamite troupe!"

Happy Birthday, BBDC! 🥳🎉

Yesterday, we captured some photos of our special guests from Limón Dance Company in a technical rehearsal of one of José Limón's best known works, "The Moor's Pavane." This iconic masterwork utilizes the pavane, a court dance of the High Renaissance, to condense the drama, suspense, and tragedy of Shakespeare's "Othello" into a breathtaking 20-minute tour de force.

Don't miss the rare opportunity to experience Limón Company artists Johnson Guo, Joey Columbus, Mariah Gravelin, and Jessica Sgambelluri performing this seminal work tomorrow night at the Koger Center for the Arts during our gala concert featuring Limón Dance Company in performance with artists from The Joffrey Ballet and USC's Betsy Blackmon Dance Company.

USC Associate Professor André Megerdichian, who performed as a guest artist with LDC for several years, says, "The technique [Limón] developed is still a vital component of the contemporary landscape today. To see these works from performers with a direct access to that lineage is rare in our time.”
