"What it’s like to be a black male… my heart just hurts trying to figure out words to say because there’s no real words to describe waking up every morning angry. Not because I’m angry because a personal situation happened or I did bad on a test, but I’m angry because I know that when I go to the store, someone’s going to look at me like I’m going to steal something. Or when I was in the Mizzou store, not too many days ago, buying books, that people are looking at me when the bell goes off, even though I’m nowhere near it. I’m the person that gets criminalized. The fact that I have a deep mistrust of the police and the police system because of my experiences everywhere I go, and I freeze up every time I see a police officer."

How can you as an individual respond to oppression and marginalization on this campus?

"I don't see myself as a loud voice. I'm not going to be the person with a microphone, or debating on social media. It's just not who I am. But that doesn’t mean I can’t make change. My quiet voice works at the individual level, talking with people and trying to show alternate perspectives on the issues."

How can you as an individual respond to oppression and marginalization on this campus?

"By staying engaged with the movement towards an inclusive campus and not allowing my concern or sense of urgency to fade. It’s not enough to think about racism when the climate at Mizzou is national news, and then pat myself on the back and move on. I want to continue the momentum and process of critical reflection on myself, my studies, and this campus, and be supportive of others working towards change."

How can you as an individual respond to oppression and marginalization on this campus?

"Through education and action. I need to challenge myself and be challenged to be more aware of what is happening around me. I used to embrace being involved, but the older I’ve gotten, the more I have fallen into the routine of go to work, go home, repeat. I realize that the ability to detach myself from what is happening around me is a privilege I have that others do not. I still care about what is happening around me and I want to get back to being involved in my community and educating each other. We all have to be active participants in removing oppression or it will never truly go away."

How can you as an individual respond to oppression and marginalization on this campus?

"As an individual I can respond to oppression and marginalization on this campus by listening to others and raising my own awareness of what’s going on. I believe that a great first step is just to be able to begin that line of communication and learn from one another’s experiences. It’s really easy to just stand by silently and let things happen, and I haven’t been the best at that in the past. It’s uncomfortable, but I want to step out of my comfort zone."
