Meet Agnes! 🦉✨

This sweet Eastern Screech Owl recently visited our Introduction to Captive Wild Animal Management class (AN_SCI 1012). Because she imprinted on humans early in life, Agnes can’t be released into the wild, but she has found an incredible purpose as an education ambassador with Mizzou CVM Raptor Rehabilitation Project!

She was joined by her handler, Kirra Behnen, an undergraduate student studying Fisheries & Wildlife Sciences in Mizzou SNR with Mizzou CAFNR. From wildlife rehabilitation to hands-on classroom experiences, our Tigers are doing the work. 🐯🖤💛

Congratulations to senior Animal Sciences student, Leah Bellof (pictured right), who earned 2nd place in the CAFNR Research Symposium Undergraduate Posted Competition on Wednesday! Her independent research project is titled “Influence of genetic selection for thermotolerance on fear response in F4 generation of gilts”. During her undergraduate research experience, Leah has worked closely with Lillian Bombeck (pictured left), a graduate student in Dr. Jay Johnson’s lab.

Undergraduate research is a great opportunity for students to gain additional hands-on experience beyond the classroom. Success in competitions both near and far show how much students learn when collaborating with their peers and faculty. Great work and way to represent Animal Sciences and our students!

Last weekend, the Animal Sciences’ Equine Teaching Facility helped to host the CAFNR Showcase. This event highlights Animal Sciences and other programs within the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources to over 6,000 community members. Various student clubs and organizations were each provided the opportunity to educate the public about its members’ favorite aspects of Animal Sciences.

Our 2027 Equine Reproduction Internship is now open!!!

Interns will participate in a breeding season internship program (non-DVM) and rotate through Mare, Stallion and Foaling shifts. Training may include:

Stallion

🔹Preparation of cooled-transported semen
🔹Semen evaluation
🔹Semen freezing
🔹Stallion collection cleaning protocols

Mare
🔹Hormone therapy
🔹Reproductive management of mares

🔹Embryo transfer management
🔹Restraint for farrier work
🔹Reproductive management of mares
🔹Care of the pregnant mare
🔹Overnight foal watch; care of the newborn foal
🔹Dystocia management
🔹Herd health management

Last night the Animal Sciences Representatives hosted their first study night in the Animal Sciences Research Center, bringing students from different classes across our program together to study for upcoming exams. The Reps provided popcorn and soda for this event designed to promote interactive study habits with our new and returning students.

A special thanks to Rienna Franks, Teacher Assistant for Genetics of Agricultural Plants and Animals, for joining us and answering students’ questions as they prepare for their first genetics exam of the semester!

Thank you to everyone who attended the event and made the first An Sci Study Night a success. Happy studying everyone and best of luck with your exams!
