As work continues to digitize and transcribe the 700 interviews in the International Women's Year collection, we've added 60 women's stories in the past year. Today we celebrate with a reminder that we are committed to sharing these stories of struggle and accomplishment 44 years ago: https://digital.library.sc.edu/exhibits/iwy/national-interviews/

Larry Lebby (1950-2019) was a South Carolina artist and one of the first Black students to integrate Airport High School in Columbia. In this first of two interviews, he describes his experiences at AHS and, among other subjects, recounts how he came to know Benjamin Mays while painting his portrait.

Thank you to Marine Mattie DeBramaletta for these wise words of wisdom: “Do not let somebody else set your limit. Reach for it, go for it, and do it. That’s what I think. I know I would have not known back in 1968 when I started this journey that I’d be able to sit here and talk about what it was like because I did not have any idea. I’d never known a Marine in my whole life and I am the only Marine in my family.” See her full interview here:
