Understanding how microbes function in the body might help us better understand a host of liver diseases and other conditions such as gastroenteritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Now, there's a center at MU dedicated to helping scientists process DNA and other related data about microbial populations in a "one-stop shop" fashion. More than 130 undergraduates will present their work at the Undergraduate Research & Creative Achievements Forum, which is scheduled for 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at McQuinn Atrium in the Bond Life Sciences Center on the MU campus.

In addition to MU students, 50 visiting students from schools such as Truman State University, William Woods University, Princeton University, Columbia University, Vanderbilt University and the University of Western Cape in South Africa also will present their work. From 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., we will have a ceremony to recognize interns and faculty mentors in Monsanto Auditorium in Bond Life Sciences Center. Interns are expected to attend and all research team members are welcome to attend.

Blood vessels can actually get better with age, according to researchers at Mizzou. Steven Segal, PhD, led the study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published in The Physiological Society's Journal of Physiology.

Richelle Koopman, MD, associate professor of family and community medicine at the MU School of Medicine, has received a five-year, $2.2 million grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to develop an easy-to-read graph of a patient’s blood pressure numbers. MU research finds that patient outcomes could improve by preparing nursing homes in using an electronic communication system known as a health information exchange.
