Medicine was always part of the picture for Bryce Richmond. With both of his parents working in health care, he initially planned to pursue human medicine. But his lifelong experience with horses and interest in animal health led him to seek out a path that combined both.

Now a second-year student at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Bryce is taking advantage of opportunities to explore the profession from different angles. Through livestock labs, the Equine Club and the Emergency and Critical Care Club, he has gained experience in large animal medicine while getting a glimpse of the fast-paced world of emergency medicine.

As he looks toward future, Bryce is keeping his options open and embracing the chance to discover where his interests will take him.

“I think it’s important to challenge yourself and find every sort of avenue that you can get involved in,” he said. “Mizzou has made that possible by giving me opportunities to experience so many different sides of veterinary medicine, and that's helped me narrow down what interests me most.”

On July 2, Lauren Hays had open-heart surgery. This week, she’s back at , ready to begin the part of veterinary school she’s been waiting for: clinics.

It all started in January, during Lauren’s second year of veterinary school, when a routine doctor’s visit uncovered a congenital heart condition that would require surgery. For the rest of the semester, she quietly balanced cardiology appointments and testing with classes, exams and catching up on missed school — all while processing a diagnosis many of the people around her never knew she was navigating.

As she moved from appointment to appointment and eventually into surgery, Lauren found herself drawing on what she was learning at Mizzou in an entirely new way. Her veterinary training helped her understand her own diagnosis and care, ask questions and make sense of her test results. It also helped her translate complicated medical information for worried family and friends.

And, of course, cats helped, too. Lauren, who has fostered more than 160 cats, decorated her hospital room with dozens of cat photos and kept her own cat, Nugget Steve, close by in the form of a pillow and custom pajamas. She said the experience gave her a new appreciation for just how much comfort, communication and feeling cared for can matter when you’re the one in the hospital bed.

“I know what it feels like to get a diagnosis and have your whole world change,” Lauren said. “As I head into clinics and eventually practice as a veterinarian, I want to make sure I always take time to explain the why, answer questions and make sure my patients and their owners feel seen.”

Lauren hopes to build a career in small animal emergency medicine and, eventually, focus exclusively on feline patients. As she begins her clinical training at Mizzou this year, she’ll put that new perspective into practice — this time from the other side of the exam table.

This week, we had to say goodbye to a beloved member of the family. 💛

Tim, one of our longtime Mizzou mules, was humanely euthanized at age 33 following a decline in his health and quality of life.

Tim arrived at the CVM with his longtime teammate, Terry, in 2003. For nearly two decades, the pair represented the university at events across Missouri, meeting countless people along the way. They retired in 2020 and have spent the past few years enjoying quieter days in the pasture, visits from friends and, of course, plenty of treats.

We’re grateful for the 23 years Tim spent with us and for every person who helped make them good ones. He will be deeply missed.

It’s the first day of classes at !

For our DVM students, Mizzou’s unique 2+2 curriculum means two years of classroom and laboratory learning followed by two years of clinical training — giving students more time gaining hands-on experience with patients.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this year’s Welcome Convocation! Students, families, friends and the CVM community gathered to celebrate the Class of 2030 and hear from guest speaker, Dr. Bo Brock.

Each student also received a personalized stethoscope to symbolize the beginning of their veterinary journey. We’re excited to welcome this class and look forward to all that’s ahead! 🩺🐯
