What does Ohio law require to prove an insanity defense?

As a verdict approaches in the New Albany warehouse shooting trial, Capital University Law School Associate Professor Robert Barnhart explains the legal standard at the center of the case, including the role of mental disease, a defendant’s understanding of the wrongfulness of their actions, and what their conduct after a crime may reveal.

Barnhart also discusses why insanity cases present a unique intersection between medicine and the law, an important topic he explores with his students in the classroom.

Capital University Law School was honored to welcome Justice Jennifer Brunner L'83 of the Ohio Supreme Court to the law school this past week for a visit that highlighted the importance of public service, professionalism, and engagement with the legal community.

During her visit, Justice Brunner guest lectured in the State Constitutional Law class. She also joined the newly rechartered Whiteside Inn of Phi Delta Phi to speak about public service and the importance of professionalism in the legal field, sharing stories from her time on the bench. The Whiteside Inn was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to host such a respected legal mind and looks forward to continuing to highlight exemplars of ethics and professionalism in central Ohio.

We are grateful to Justice Brunner for spending time with our students and community, sharing her experiences, and serving as an inspiring example of ethics and professionalism in the legal profession. Capital University Law looks forward to continuing to welcome and learn from legal leaders across central Ohio.

We will never forget the events of September 11, 2001 and the lives lost that day.

Twenty-five years later, we pause as a community to remember the events of September 11, 2001, and the lives forever changed by that day.

For many of today’s students, this day is part of history they have learned through the stories of family, educators and their communities. As we reflect, we honor those who were lost and those whose courage, sacrifice and service helped communities come together in the days that followed.

May we continue to remember, learn from history and carry forward a spirit of compassion, service and unity. 🇺🇸
