The W Child and Parent Development Center Lab School + Early Childhood Hub Home of The W’s CPDC lab school + early education projects, managed by CES. The W has housed an early learning center and lab school since 1929.

The Child and Parent Development Center is The W’s laboratory school for campus and the Columbus community. We provide preschool and early education experiences for children who are one-five years of age by September 1st of the enrollment year. The CPDC is a working laboratory for university students in multiple disciplines to make real-life connections with what they learn in their academic coursework. The CPDC is a non-profit program and accepts parent tuition or Mississippi Childcare Certificates. The CPDC is part of the School of Education and is licensed by the Mississippi Department of Health. We're looking forward to tonight's Lowndes Community Foundation Community Forum! 💙

Mackenzie Pearce from the Center for Education Support will share an update on behalf of the Education Task Force, including an expansion of WISE Start's developmental screening work with The W's Speech-Language Pathology faculty and students, Mississippi Families for Kids, and Help Me Grow.

Working with Dr. Catherine Cotton and Speech-Language Pathology students, new funding will support classroom kits designed to give children more opportunities to explore and practice developmental milestones in our partner childcare centers across Lowndes County.

The forum will also feature updates from other community task forces, announcements of the 2026 grant recipients, and opportunities to connect with others working to strengthen Columbus and Lowndes County.

It’s conference season, and we’re headed to one of our favorites! 💙 We’re ready to see our early childhood family at the Mississippi Early Childhood Association (MsECA) Conference tomorrow!

We’re bringing along some of our education students and teachers from the Child and Parent Development Center (CPDC), The W’s lab school, and looking forward to learning, sharing ideas, and catching up with early childhood educators from across Mississippi.

We hear a lot about the challenges families and educators face when supporting children with autism, and toilet learning is one of those areas where practical resources and individualized strategies can make a real difference.

Our friends at The University of Southern Mississippi and the Mississippi Council on Developmental Disabilities are working to develop the PAUSE Toolkit, and they want to hear directly from the families and professionals who navigate these experiences every day!

There are two brief surveys, one for parents and caregivers and another for educators and professionals. Your experiences, challenges, and ideas will help shape resources that families and educators can actually use. Please take a few minutes to share your perspective, and help us get these surveys into the hands of families, teachers, childcare providers, therapists, and others who may have valuable experiences to contribute.

Out in the community! Today, 10 Speech-Language Pathology students, both graduate and undergraduate, along with two faculty members from The W joined the WISE Start and Help Me Grow teams for developmental screenings at Columbus Christian School.

We are so thankful for this partnership and for the opportunity to bring together university students, faculty, early childhood professionals, and community partners to support young children and families. This is what community collaboration should look like! 💛
