Sometimes, one calling leads you to another.

Dr. Jennifer Middleton, M.D., knew from childhood that she wanted to become a physician. Years into her medical career at OhioHealth, another calling began to take shape, leading her to ministry.

Now, as a student at Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University, Dr. Middleton is preparing to serve healthcare workers, drawing on her experiences in medicine to help others navigate the challenges and humanity of their work.

For Dr. Middleton, medicine and ministry are two expressions of the same calling: walking alongside people through life.

First day of kindergarten at Pleasants County Schools ➡️ first day of undergraduate classes at Capital University.

I’m fairly certain the five-year-old from the valleys of West Virginia in this picture had no idea where his education would eventually take him. And maybe that’s one of the gifts of a first day: you don’t yet know the people you’ll meet, the questions you’ll ask, the opportunities you’ll discover, or the person you’ll become along the way.

At Opening Assembly, I reminded our newest students that their time at Capital is measured in weeks, a finite number of weeks to learn, grow, build relationships, take chances, and begin shaping what comes next.

Well, Comets, welcome to the first week of the rest of your life.

Make it count — but don’t feel like you have to have it all figured out. Be curious. Meet someone new. Ask the question. Take the chance. Let yourself be challenged. Ask for help when you need it.

Someday, you may look back at a picture from this first week and realize just how much of your story was still waiting to be written.
