As a young man in Italy, Giorgio Rizzoni spent his free time taking apart his motorcycle to understand what made it go.

He’d remove the carburetor. Clean it. Put it back together. Then do it again — learning, piece by piece, how every part worked.

Growing up in a country where auto racing is woven deeply into the culture, Rizzoni fit right in.

Since arriving on campus in 1990, Rizzoni has helped build his own kind of coliseum for the automotive industry: the Center for Automotive Research (CAR). Founded in 1991, CAR has grown into a national leader in automotive research, tackling challenges in sustainability and safe mobility while preparing the next generation of automotive and mobility leaders. Rizzoni became its director in 1999.

Through partnerships spanning the automotive and aerospace industries, Rizzoni has guided CAR through groundbreaking research while creating a hands-on environment where students work alongside researchers and industry leaders to imagine and build the future of mobility.

“I have the best job at Ohio State,” he says with a smile. “It’s a dream come true.”

On Friday afternoon, we welcomed Paul R. Chiarot, Professor and Chair of Mechanical Engineering at State University of New York at Binghamton, as part of the MAE Distinguished Colloquium Series.

He shared insights into electrospray deposition, a manufacturing process that uses electrically charged droplets to create thin films and conformal coatings. His presentation explored how charge influences material deposition, with applications ranging from electronics manufacturing and packaging to advanced materials research.

Fueling the future right here at The Ohio State University!

This morning, Oklo Inc. announced a $2.5 million donation to help facilitate the launch of an undergraduate nuclear engineering major, renovate instructional and research facilities, create an endowed professorship and support student scholarships.

Together, the company’s support, $500,000 in gifts from its executives and additional university matching funds for scholarships will deliver a total impact of $4.5 million.

“Ohio helped build America’s nuclear industry and the people of the Buckeye State will help lead its future,” said John Hanson, a native Ohioan and Ohio State alumnus who serves as corporate chief of staff and leads Oklo's power business.

“The next generation of nuclear engineers will turn the technologies we’re developing today into the reliable energy our country needs for decades to come. By expanding access to nuclear engineering education and hands-on research, Ohio State is preparing students to lead that work. Together, we’re connecting education with real-world opportunity, so students can put their knowledge to work building advanced nuclear technologies right here in Ohio.”

Did you know we have homecoming royalty right here in Scott Lab? Our department chair, Rob Siston, was a member of Ohio State’s Homecoming Court in 1998! 👑

As part of the festivities, Rob got to ride in the Homecoming parade float and even made an appearance on the scoreboard during the Minnesota game.

This Buckeye researcher is making an impact! 🏆

Fariha Haque, mechanical engineering PhD student, earned second place in the Computational Mechanics Student Paper Competition at this year's Engineering Mechanics Institute.

Her research uses computational modeling to explore how thin, multilayer optical coatings respond to ultrafast laser pulses and how the resulting stresses and deformation can lead to cracking or delamination.

By uncovering where and why these nanoscale coatings fail, Haque's work could help guide the design of advanced laser and photonic systems that are not only high-performing, but also more robust and reliable.

“Receiving second place in the Computational Mechanics Student Paper Competition was especially meaningful because it reflects the broader direction I hope to pursue in my research,” she shared.

Her work was funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Buckeye Donuts makes the best midterm motivation! 🍩

Our department chair stopped by the undergraduate student lounge this morning to pass out donuts and coffee for students putting in the study hours. They also answered trivia questions to win some MAE swag!

Good luck on your midterms, Buckeyes! And don't forget to take advantage of the newly renovated study spaces across Scott Lab when you need a spot to cram for that next test.

From the lab to the skies: student research takes flight in microgravity ✈️

Two Aerospace PhD students, Nick Gomori and Edward Lui, had their research tested on a parabolic flight in Dubendorf, Switzerland in representing Starlab Space. Lui's research explores cold welding as a new method for in-space manufacturing applications without the need for melting or traditional welding processes. Gomori's research focuses on creating a standardized interface for experimental payloads. Gomori was aboard the aircraft, conducting trials on both projects through joint cooperative research experiments and gathering data during the parabolic flight.

A special thanks to the three members of Notre Dame’s TIME Lab, Maria Eduarda Mendes Silva, Haley Marco and Jason Riedl and Starlab Space’s Abigail Harrison, who assisted with timing on the parabolic. Gomori also thanks his advisor Dr. John Horack, for making the journey to microgravity possible.
