In Strength & Conditioning (EXSC 4100), students took their knowledge of resistance training a step further by focusing on exercise classification, selection, and application. It's not just WHAT exercise you choose, but WHY you choose it!
Throughout the lab, students analyzed movement patterns, compared exercises with similar muscular demands, and used athlete testing data to make informed programming decisions.๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ
There is no single "best" exercise for every athlete. Effective strength and conditioning requires understanding the athlete's individual needs, goals, and abilities, and being able to justify every exercise selected!

๐Ÿ’Œโค๏ธ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Emma Steiger
Turning kindness into connection! ๐Ÿ’š
As part of EXSC 3200 with Instructor Tyler Beauregard, Emma created and led the Cardinal Community Card Project, an initiative designed to promote connection and help combat social isolation among older adults.
Emma organized two campus card-making workshops, bringing Otterbein students together to create 200 handmade cards for residents at The Gables of Westerville. What started as a simple idea became an opportunity to spread encouragement, build community connections, and remind others that even a small act of kindness can make a meaningful impact. ๐Ÿ’Œ
Along the way, Emma stepped into a leadership role, built a community partnership, and gained hands-on experience planning and carrying out a service initiative from start to finish.
This is HSS learning in actionโ€”taking what happens in the classroom and using it to make a difference in the community. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ–ค
Way to go, Emma! ๐Ÿ‘

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported the D.R.E.A.M. Lab at the 2026 Columbus Buddy Walk!๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Whether you walked with us, donated to our team, shared our fundraiser, or cheered us on, your support helped make this yearโ€™s Buddy Walk such a meaningful experience. We are incredibly grateful to our students, friends, family, and community members who helped us support the Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio (DSACO) and its mission of promoting awareness, acceptance, and inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

We are proud to be part of a community that continues to show up, give back, and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome. Thank you for helping the D.R.E.A.M. Research Lab make a difference!โค๏ธ

We already canโ€™t wait for next year!

๐Ÿฉธโค๏ธ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Dezmond Howard

Turning advocacy into action! ๐Ÿ‘

As part of EXSC 3200 with Instructor Tyler Beauregard, Dezmond recently put his learning into practice by organizing a campus blood drive with a special focus on raising awareness about sickle cell disease and the importance of blood donation.
From coordinating the event to encouraging others to get involved, Dezmond transformed an important health issue into an opportunity for the Otterbein community to take action. His work brought together leadership, health advocacy, and community service while helping support a lifesaving cause.

This is what we love to see in HSSโ€”students taking what they learn in the classroom and using it to make a meaningful impact on the health of their community. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ–ค

Way to go, Dezmond!

Strength & Conditioning lab day! (EXSC 4100)๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

This lab focused on developing practical skills in strength & conditioning. In this lab, students learned exercise preparation, correct spotting technique, and how to coach common free-weight and machine exercises.

Learning the skills to not just train, but also coach with confidence.
Another great day of exercise science in action! ๐Ÿค—
