Alpha Phi Alpha Delta Iota Lambda Chapter First of All, Servants of All, We shall Transcend ALL! Throughout its history, Alpha Phi Alpha has promoted knowledge and achievement.

On December 4, 1906, seven undergraduate students at Cornell University, “The Seven Jewels,” organized Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the first intercollegiate fraternity among African American men. With the Great Sphinx of Giza as its symbol, and the motto “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All,” Alpha Phi Alpha dedicated itself to defend the rights and to promote the responsibilitie

s of African Americans. The founders of Alpha Phi Alpha sought to combine social purpose with social action, to be more than a social organization. The archives for Alpha Chapter at Cornell University reveal the tenacity of the early members of the Fraternity as it expanded to Howard University in 1907 and to Virginia Union University in 1908, and subsequently to other major campuses across the country. Although Alpha Chapter helped to shepherd the early growth of the Fraternity, it soon relinquished its administrative role as Alpha Phi Alpha became a national organization. The Sphinx Magazine, published in 1914, is the second oldest continuously published black journal in the United States. The oldest one is the NAACP’s Crisis Magazine, which was started by W.E.B. Du Bois, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Alpha Chapter encouraged the Fraternity to adopt its signature program “Go-to-High School, Go-to-College” in 1919 to increase the number of black students eligible for college enrollment. Over the years, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has initiated national programs to end segregation in professional education, to increase voter registration and turn-out, to create decent and affordable housing for African Americans, to encourage business development, to foster male sexual responsibility, and to mentor young men. In 1998, Congress authorized and the President approved Alpha Phi Alpha’s request to build a memorial on the Mall in Washington, D.C. to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of Alpha’s most distinguished members. Between the history book and the chapter’s charter, the Delta Iota Lambda is slated with 2 years of being founded: 1943 & 1948. The official charter date as listed on the chapter’s charter is June 1, 1948. The first meeting place of Delta Iota Lambda was at the USO in Columbus, GA.

“If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch…” — Rudyard Kipling

There are moments that remind you of the reach, legacy, and enduring Brotherhood of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. 🤙🏾🖤💛

It was truly an honor to welcome Bro. Senior Bishop James B. Walker and Lady Delois W. Walker to Columbus as the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church celebrated his leadership in Georgia and the Sixth Episcopal District.

Bro. Senior Bishop Walker's presence in our city was significant—not only because of his distinguished leadership in the Church, but because once again, the bonds of Alpha reminded us that our Brotherhood stretches across professions, pulpits, communities, and generations.

I was humbled to bring greetings on behalf of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Delta Iota Lambda Chapter and to stand alongside other Brothers in welcoming Bro. Senior Bishop Walker to Columbus.

Kipling wrote, “If you can walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch.” That line speaks powerfully to the standard of Alpha: to achieve, to lead, to serve, and still remain committed to uplifting humanity.

From the halls of government to classrooms, boardrooms, and pulpits, Alpha men continue to answer the call of leadership and service.

Bro. Senior Bishop Walker, welcome to Columbus and to Georgia. The Brothers of Delta Iota Lambda are honored by your presence and pray for continued strength, wisdom, and favor as you lead.

“And—which is more—you'll be a Man, my son!”

A VOTELESS PEOPLE IS A HOPELESS PEOPLE 🗳️

The work of civic engagement happens when we show up, educate, register, and empower our communities!

The Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.® — Delta Iota Lambda Chapter were proud to participate in the 4th Annual 706 Day Festival, advancing our national program, A Voteless People Is a Hopeless People® (VPHP).

Under the leadership of Bro. Anthony Murray, VPHP Committee Chairman, Brothers engaged directly with members of the community, provided voter education, discussed the critical gap between voter registration and actual voter participation, and helped eligible citizens register to vote.

Special thanks to Bro. Dr. Williams for educating the local electorate on the voter registration numbers compared to participation in our most recent primary election. Being registered is only the first step. We must show up and vote.

One of the highlights of the day was registering a soon-to-be first-time voter who turned 18 just two weeks ago! That moment represents exactly why this work matters. One new voter. One informed citizen. One more voice prepared to participate in our democracy.

The Brothers of Delta Iota Lambda remain committed to being visible, engaged, and active in the Columbus community.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO NOVEMBER. 🗳️

Today is Election Day.

The Brothers of the Delta Iota Lambda Chapter of Columbus, Georgia, proudly continue the legacy of our national “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” campaign — a movement rooted in civic engagement, voter education, and the protection of our democracy.

Our vote is our voice.

At a time when voting rights continue to face challenges across this country, it is more important than ever that we show up, stand up, and speak up at the ballot box. Elections are not just about national politics. They are about our local schools, public safety, economic opportunities, judges, city leadership, and the future direction of our communities.

We encourage every eligible voter in Columbus and the Chattahoochee Valley to make your voice heard today. Do not let others decide the future of your community without your participation.

The Brothers of Delta Iota Lambda have voted. Now we encourage you to do the same.

“A Voteless People is a Hopeless People.”

The mission was bigger than scholarships. It was about investing in futures.

Yesterday evening, The Alpha Onward & Upward Foundation Inc. of Columbus Georgia in partnership with the Alpha Phi Alpha Delta Iota Lambda Chapter proudly recognized and awarded scholarships to more than 20 exceptional students preparing to begin the next chapter of their lives.

As President of the chapter, I want to thank the brothers of our chapter for continuing to stand at the forefront of service, scholarship, mentorship, and community impact. Your partnership and support continue to create opportunities that will impact generations to come.

To our guest speaker, Bro. Blake, thank you for reminding our students that success requires D.A.P.: Discipline. Association. Perseverance.

That message resonated deeply throughout the room.
I also want to recognize the tremendous leadership of the Alpha Onward & Upward Foundation Board and Chairman, Bro. Sirr Jones, for continuing to invest in young people throughout our community.

Congratulations to every scholarship recipient and every student who took the step to apply. Continue to dream big, stay focused, and pursue excellence. Your future is bright, and we look forward to watching you succeed.
