Day 1 of Farm Science Review is in the books! 🐄🐎🐖
Visitors to the College of Veterinary Medicine's Protect OHIO booth got a hands-on look at animal anatomy through bone identification activities and learned how Protect OHIO is helping strengthen the large animal veterinary workforce in rural communities across Ohio.
Thank you to State Senator Andrew O. Brenner and State Representative Joe Miller for visiting our booth and learning more about the college’s work through Protect OHIO.

It was a busy summer for the college’s Protect OHIO initiative! 🐄🐎

Earlier this summer, Protect OHIO partnered with Ohio Farm Bureau to help deliver two hands-on ExploreAg sessions that introduced students to opportunities in large animal veterinary medicine. Through experiences at the College of Veterinary Medicine and at MVP Dairy, students gained firsthand insight into clinical skills, biosecurity, dairy production and large animal care.

Among its summer outreach efforts, Protect OHIO also joined students at the Ohio State - College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Back 2 School Bash to celebrate the start of a new academic year. Students stopped by to learn more about pathways to becoming a large animal veterinarian and customize their own livestock ear tags.

These experiences support Protect OHIO’s goal of inspiring the next generation of large animal veterinarians and strengthening Ohio’s rural veterinary workforce!

We’re proud to collaborate with the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on research that can help advance stingray health and veterinary care.

Veterinary specialists from The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center recently joined the Zoo’s Conservation Medicine team to perform ultrasounds and bloodwork on cownose rays in Stingray Bay.

By establishing normal ultrasound benchmarks for this species and exploring how imaging and bloodwork can work together, this collaborative research may help improve how stingrays are monitored and cared for in the future!

On this day in 1885, the Ohio State University Board of Trustees voted to establish the School of Veterinary Medicine!

In the school's early years, nearly all classroom instruction, dissection, and laboratory exercises took place in the original University Hall building and a small building nearby that was used for anatomical dissection. But by 1891, veterinary students had a new facility: the first Veterinary Hospital.

The new facility included examination and surgical rooms, stables, lecture rooms, laboratories, a pharmacy, and a veterinary museum and library.

Our Protect OHIO intiative has enjoyed connecting with fairgoers this week at the Ohio State Fair and will be back in the O'Neill Swine Building this Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon!

Stop by to learn how Protect OHIO is addressing the rural large animal veterinary shortage and take on our horse teeth challenge. Explore horse teeth displays to see how veterinarians estimate a horse's age, then put your skills to the test by arranging the teeth from youngest to oldest.

On June 12, we welcomed Ohio 4-H SPARK EXPO participants to the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Clinical Skills Lab for a hands-on look at veterinary medicine. In collaboration with Ohio State - College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, SPARK EXPO is a 4-H career exploration program designed to help youth build valuable skills, fuel individual growth and discover future career pathways.

Led by Dr. Emily Feyes, a registered veterinary technician and a Protect OHIO student ambassador, students rotated through a series of interactive stations. They practiced proper donning and doffing of personal protective equipment, learned how to place an equine dental speculum for an exam and explored the importance of effective handwashing and infection control techniques.

Thank you to these future leaders for bringing their curiosity and enthusiasm to campus!

Congratulations to Gracie Weber of Fairfield County, recipient of the 2026 Ohio 4-H Achievement Award in Veterinary Science, sponsored by The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine!

Gracie, who hopes to become a large animal veterinarian, was recognized alongside Brutus Buckeye and Dr. Leah Dorman, director of outreach and engagement for Protect OHIO – a statewide initiative led by Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine focused on strengthening Ohio’s veterinary workforce and supporting the agricultural economy.

We are proud to celebrate students like Gracie who represent the future of veterinary medicine in Ohio!

New research from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine highlights why influenza D virus deserves closer attention.

In a study published in PNAS, Ohio State researchers found that multiple strains of influenza D — an emerging virus primarily associated with cattle — can replicate efficiently in human respiratory cells and lung tissue. While no human infections have been confirmed, the findings underscore the importance of surveillance and continued research to better understand its potential public health implications.
