Our Protect OHIO intiative has enjoyed connecting with fairgoers this week at the Ohio State Fair and will be back in the O'Neill Swine Building this Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon!

Stop by to learn how Protect OHIO is addressing the rural large animal veterinary shortage and take on our horse teeth challenge. Explore horse teeth displays to see how veterinarians estimate a horse's age, then put your skills to the test by arranging the teeth from youngest to oldest.

On June 12, we welcomed Ohio 4-H SPARK EXPO participants to the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Clinical Skills Lab for a hands-on look at veterinary medicine. In collaboration with Ohio State - College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, SPARK EXPO is a 4-H career exploration program designed to help youth build valuable skills, fuel individual growth and discover future career pathways.

Led by Dr. Emily Feyes, a registered veterinary technician and a Protect OHIO student ambassador, students rotated through a series of interactive stations. They practiced proper donning and doffing of personal protective equipment, learned how to place an equine dental speculum for an exam and explored the importance of effective handwashing and infection control techniques.

Thank you to these future leaders for bringing their curiosity and enthusiasm to campus!

Congratulations to Gracie Weber of Fairfield County, recipient of the 2026 Ohio 4-H Achievement Award in Veterinary Science, sponsored by The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine!

Gracie, who hopes to become a large animal veterinarian, was recognized alongside Brutus Buckeye and Dr. Leah Dorman, director of outreach and engagement for Protect OHIO – a statewide initiative led by Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine focused on strengthening Ohio’s veterinary workforce and supporting the agricultural economy.

New research from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine highlights why influenza D virus deserves closer attention.

In a study published in PNAS, Ohio State researchers found that multiple strains of influenza D — an emerging virus primarily associated with cattle — can replicate efficiently in human respiratory cells and lung tissue. While no human infections have been confirmed, the findings underscore the importance of surveillance and continued research to better understand its potential public health implications.

Before we turn the page completely, we want to recognize the Class of 2026 for the lasting impact they made at Columbus Humane. Through their shelter medicine rotations, the class achieved:

🐕 513 dog spays/neuters
🐈 4,241 cat spays/neuters
🐇 83 rabbit spays/neuters

They completed 2,061 community cat surgeries in total — a new Columbus Humane record — contributing to a grand total of 4,837 procedures, another record.

While these numbers tell an impressive story, what stands out most is the compassion, empathy, teamwork, and dedication this class brought to every patient, client, and colleague. Their work has made a lasting difference for animals and the people who love them.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026 — we're proud of all you've accomplished and can't wait to see the impact you'll make in years to come!

A new report from the Farm Journal Foundation takes a look at the shortage of rural and food-systems veterinarians in Ohio — and what it will take to address it.

This National Pet Cancer Awareness Month, we’re honoring the story behind a beloved tradition at The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center’s Oncology Service. ❤️🐾

After their dog Tagato underwent cancer treatment, George and Tina Skestos were inspired to bring the bandana tradition they experienced at Colorado State University back to Ohio State. For 40 years, the Skestos family, longtime dog lovers and founders of Gigi’s nonprofit shelter, have helped provide red bandanas to celebrate pets completing cancer treatment.

Today, each bandana symbolizes courage, hope and the bond between patients, families and caregivers.
