For most Ohio State fans, Brutus Buckeye is simply the mascot on the sidelines. But behind that giant Buckeye head are students who are balancing classes, early-morning workouts, practices and hundreds of appearances. For an entire year, Columbus Dispatch journalists Sheridan Hendrix and Adam Cairns followed the Brutus team behind the scenes, from tryouts and mascot camp to football games, community events and a run at a national championship.

The new book Being Brutus explains the history, work and people behind one of Ohio State’s most recognizable traditions.

What does it take to be Brutus Buckeye?

The Columbus Dispatch higher education reporter Sheridan Hendrix explains how Brutus Buckeye is so unique among mascots.

Because Brutus is an anthropomorphic nut, unlike most college and professional mascots, there is flexibility. That means Brutus can zipline into Ohio Stadium, run across the field, do push-ups every time Ohio State's football team scores and much more every game day.

Hendrix and fellow Dispatch journalist Adam Cairns followed the Brutus team behind the scenes for an entire academic year.

Their reporting became the new book "Being Brutus," which explores the history, work and people behind one of Ohio State’s most recognizable traditions.
