IUCA+D Salon Talks

Salon Talks are organized to give artists and designers in our community a forum in which to present their work to each other in the effort to generate discussion and debate on the ideas, directions, practices and theories that inform our work, and our lives, as artists and designers. While individuals will be invited to present in this series, there is no application for participation in a Salon Talk. Anyone may present their work for discussion and is most welcome to do so. They will be scheduled in the first available Thursday convenient to all. Salon Talks are routinely scheduled on alternating Thursdays, and, under special circumstances or for unique opportunities organized weekly. The general public is very welcome to attend and are invited to listen and contribute in our discussion.

Matthew Mindrup | Architecture Forgets, An Alternative View

Join us for a lecture by Matthew Mindrup where he proposes an alternative way of understanding the transformation of the built environment, challenging architectural discourse’s tendency to celebrate memory as an unquestioned virtue while treating forgetting as loss or failure. Buildings and cities, he argues, endure not by remaining unchanged but by repeatedly relinquishing what they once were. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples of architecture, art, ritual, and theories of memory and perception, Mindrup explores forgetting as a deliberate and generative art: one that loosens established relationships among form, use, identity, and meaning.

Frances Lightbound | The Land Dissolves in Water

Join us for a lecture and exhibition featuring UK-born, Chicago-based artist Frances Lightbound, whose interdisciplinary practice explores relationships between time, bodies, and buildings.

Through photography, print, spatial interventions, and sculpture, Lightbound investigates urban environments and the ways materials, architecture, and landscapes shape our understanding of space. The Land Dissolves in Water explores questions of land use, ownership, access, and perception through the relationship between built and natural environments.

Students presented their ongoing work through drawings, physical models, and design studies, engaging in discussions and receiving feedback on their developing projects. The reviews provided an opportunity to reflect on progress, exchanging ideas, and identify directions for the remainder of the semester.

The J. Irwin Miller Master of Architecture program is a three-year in-residence program, with a two-year advanced placement track possible for students who hold a B.Arch from a NAAB-accredited institution or regional equivalent. With our twin studios approach, students take visual art course alongside architectural studios to develop their style of architectural design. The three-year program welcome applicants from a variety of educational and career backgrounds.

Book Launch | Supergraphic Landscapes: From Public Art to Urban Design

Join authors Joseph Altshuler and Nekita Thomas at the Columbus Visitors Center for a conversation around their new book, Supergraphic Landscapes, exploring how color, pattern, and graphics can shape public space and create more engaging connections between people and place.

The book features Columbus based projects and work by Daniel Luis Martinez and Lulu Loquidis, including 6th Street Arts Alley and the Learning Patterns mural in Columbus, as well as Heritage Park in Salem, Indiana. Martinez also contributed an essay to the publication.

The evening will include a reception, a presentation by the authors, a conversation with Martinez, and a book signing following the talk.

INSIDE OUTSIDE | T. Kelly Wilson

Professor T. Kelly Wilson’s exhibition INSIDE OUTSIDE is currently on view at Gurari Collections in Boston.
The exhibition presents a series of oil-on-canvas paintings developed through Wilson’s ongoing exploration of the Begonia plant. Working from observation at eye level, the paintings investigate relationships between form, space, gesture, and color, allowing the plant and its surrounding landscape to move between subject and context.

Think like an artist. Build like an architect.

A look at students working across Architecture and Visual Studies Studios, where ideas are being developed through different materials, methods, and forms of representation.
In Architecture Studio, students present concept models, sketches, and studies to test spatial and architectural ideas. In Visual Studies, concrete casts are presented alongside the drawings, research, and conceptual thinking that informed their making. Across both studios, students are using models and drawings as tools for developing and communicating ideas.

THE BLUEPRINT

"The Blueprint" is the first exhibit at SHED, an IU-supported project space for experimental architecture, urbanism, and design, located on the CAMi campus. Its first season is titled "Home is What the Art is"

For architects, blueprints recall the pervasive method for reproducing technical drawings that endured for
roughly eighty years. Between the mid-1870’s and 1950’s, architectural plans, sections, elevations, and details were drawn on translucent vellum. Copies were made by transferring the original drawings under UV light onto rag- or cotton-fiber paper sensitized with iron salt chemicals. This broader meaning was the subject of Jay-Z’s sixth studio album titled, “The Blueprint”, which is regarded as one of the most important hip-hop records of all time. Soul and blues samples representing a condensed lineage of black musical culture were transferred onto new compositional and lyrical contexts, which provided a blueprint for invention.

For this exhibition, the blueprint is used as both a representational and conceptual departure point. Daniel
Luis Martinez uses cyanotype printmaking and mixed-media drawing techniques as a generative process to
imagine a speculative home on the CAMi campus. The hybrid drawings and prints featured in the exhibition
explore the tactile middle-ground of the blueprint as a creative endeavor. The individual works can also be understood as records of early design ideas that comprise a playlist (or mixtape, depending on your age). Lyrics to songs whose borrowed lines serve as themes and titles are embedded into each composition. Like the project, the track list is ongoing.

LAA Office. He is currently Associate Professor and Director of Indiana University’s J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program in Columbus, Indiana.
