IUCA+D Salon Talks

Salon Talks are organized to give artists and designers in our community a forum in which to present their work to each other in the effort to generate discussion and debate on the ideas, directions, practices and theories that inform our work, and our lives, as artists and designers. While individuals will be invited to present in this series, there is no application for parti

cipation in a Salon Talk. Anyone may present their work for discussion and is most welcome to do so. They will be scheduled in the first available Thursday convenient to all. Salon Talks are routinely scheduled on alternating Thursdays, and, under special circumstances or for unique opportunities organized weekly. The general public is very welcome to attend and are invited to listen and contribute in our discussion.

Water Works explores water as both a life-giving resource and a cultural, ecological, and political force shaping Sydney’s urban landscape. Through the design of a Water Advocacy Centre along the contaminated Alexandra Canal, the studio investigates how architecture can raise public awareness while becoming an active model for water conservation, restoration, and civic engagement.

Students from Architecture Studio 5 begin the project by researching and analysing the Alexandra Canal, tracing its environmental, cultural, industrial, and urban histories. Through collaborative mapping and site investigation, they uncover the forces that have shaped the waterway and its surrounding landscape.

A look at our first-year students moving between Architecture studio with Professor Silvia Acosta and Visual Studio with Professor Kelly Wilson.

In one studio, students explore space, structure, material and atmosphere through physical constructions. In the other, charcoal drawing becomes a way to investigate form, proportion, and composition. Different mediums, complementing how students learn to see, think, and make.
