🤩 The Ohio State University + Walt Disney Imagineering = Epic Educational Experiences! The inaugural "Around the World with Disney Imagineering" global education program is a 4-week summer course that enabled students from diverse backgrounds to explore how their interests can contribute to collaborative creations like Disney parks. Students from 15 disciplines took part, including 16 engineering majors and one architecture major.

The brainchild of Engineering Instructional Technology Director Chris Strasbaugh, it is the first course offered by the The Ohio State University Office of International Affairs to combine both domestic and international travel.

“The course was designed around Disney Imagineering as a model for large-scale creative collaboration, bringing together engineers, designers, storytellers, technologists, artists and business professionals to create immersive experiences,” said Yuri Melendez, Ed.D., an instructional designer for the College of Engineering. “What made the concept especially appealing from an educational standpoint was the opportunity for students from different academic backgrounds to see how their own skills could contribute to complex, multidisciplinary projects.”

Ohio State alumni were essential in making the trip an impactful learning experience for students. In California, students toured Walt Disney Animation Studios and shared an insightful Q&A with Technical Supervisor Rebecca Thompson, a computer science and engineering alumna. In Tokyo, landscape architecture alumnus Mark Schirmer, the recently retired executive portfolio creative producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, spent a day with students exploring Tokyo DisneySea, including the newest addition, Fantasy Springs, and sharing some of the unique aspects of the park.

🚰 During World Water Week, a team led by alum Greg Bixler is showing how redesigning technology can help keep clean water flowing in parts of the world where it often does not. Bixler is a co-founder and CEO of Design Outreach and a lecturer in the College of Engineering. Design Outreach is the Ohio nonprofit behind LifePump, a hand pump built to reach deeper water and last longer in rural communities. Learn about how Bixler and his Design Outreach teammates are changing the world in this piece from Spectrum News:

An Ohio nonprofit is redesigning water pump technology to help communities around the world get more reliable access to clean water.

Data centers have dominated headlines and social feeds lately. In a four-part series, WVXU Cincinnati Public Radio delves into some of the issues surrounding them. It features several experts, including Assoc. Prof. Jeffrey Bielicki. “When we think about data centers," he said, "we need to try to find a middle road, and increasingly put more effort into using the capacity of the AI enabled by the data centers to help address environmental and human health problems — [such as] new materials discovery, new innovation on energy technologies, new understandings of pathways of respiratory disease, and so on."

Experts say data centers don't always pose a threat to the environment. Much depends on the details of a particular project and where it is being built.

🤩 Classes don't start until next week, but more than 40 new are getting a head start and having fun in our PREFACE program! It begins with an intensive summer math-focused bridge experience before the start of school and continues with academic support, coaching, and community-building opportunities throughout students’ first year.

This year’s cohort has demonstrated exceptional engagement, enthusiasm, and commitment to their academic journey. Through the CARE Office’s holistic approach to student support, PREFACE helps students build confidence, strengthen foundational math skills, develop meaningful connections with peers and mentors, and successfully transition into the College of Engineering community.

A drug-free technology that uses low-intensity electric fields reduced tumor growth and spread in preclinical models of triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of the disease, according to new research

“When people hear ‘electric fields,’ they may picture something like being shocked or zapped. That is not what we are talking about. The current does not run through the body. Instead, a wearable device can generate low-intensity fields that interact with cancer cells in a controlled way,” said Engineering Prof. Jonathan Song, co-corresponding author of the study. Song also is co-director of the Center for Cancer Engineering-CURES.

The treatment also appeared to make the area around tumors more active against cancer. These findings were published in the June 2026 issue of the journal Breast Cancer: Targets and Therapy.
