Advanced nuclear technology company Oklo Inc. is helping The Ohio State University expand and enhance its nuclear engineering program!

Oklo’s investment will facilitate the launch of an undergraduate nuclear engineering major, renovate instructional and research facilities, create an endowed professorship and support student scholarships. Together, the company’s support, gifts from its executives and university matching funds for scholarships will deliver a total impact of $4.5 million.

“Ohio helped build America’s nuclear industry and the people of the Buckeye State will help lead its future,” said John Hanson, a native Ohioan and Ohio State alumnus who serves as corporate chief of staff and leads Oklo's power business. “The next generation of nuclear engineers will turn the technologies we’re developing today into the reliable energy our country needs for decades to come. By expanding access to nuclear engineering education and hands-on research, Ohio State is preparing students to lead that work. Together, we’re connecting education with real-world opportunity, so students can put their knowledge to work building advanced nuclear technologies right here in Ohio.”

“Industry demand for nuclear engineers continues to grow, and Ohio State is expanding to meet that need,” said College of Engineering Interim Dean B. Shanker. “Oklo’s support will help us launch a new undergraduate major and give students access to the faculty, facilities and hands-on experience that prepare them to contribute from the start of their careers.”

This summer, Asst. Prof. Patrick Sours and students from our Humanitarian Engineering Program returned to Tanzania to continue 10+ years of collaboration on the Maji Marwa project, an effort to address water insecurity in rural communities near the Kilimanjaro region. 💦 🌎 🤝

Students collaborated with faculty and students from the University of Dodoma, partners from the Kilimanjaro Hope Organization, community representatives and the local governmental agency RUWASA (Rural Water Access and Sanitation Authority) to improve the capacity and hygienic aspects of the water point. A new access point was installed and repairs were made to the storage tanks. In addition, the borehole, which was previously not producing water, has been repaired and is now providing more water than ever! Buckeye Engineers look forward to continuing this collaboration into the next phase of addressing the community's long-term water needs.

🤝 More interdisciplinary innovation from Engineering & Medicine at The Ohio State University! Biomedical Engineering Prof. Rizwan Ahmad & Dr. Yuchi Han earned a $3.6M grant from The National Institutes of Health to develop a deep learning method for cardiac MRI to capture the entire heart in 3D as it beats in real time.🫀

“If successful, this technology could let us see abnormalities in cardiac motion that are difficult or impossible to characterize with current 2D and 3D methods, particularly in patients with arrhythmias,” Ahmad said.

As a cardiologist with a longstanding interest in imaging patients with arrhythmias, Dr. Han said technology capable of capturing each individual heartbeat in 3D was once only a dream.

The Ohio State University’s combination of nationally recognized Colleges of Engineering and Medicine, a top-ranked academic medical center and robust research facilities is a boon to the project, the researchers said.

“A major strength at Ohio State is the close collaboration between engineers and clinicians,” Ahmad explained. “This project brings together expertise in MRI technology and image reconstruction, cardiovascular imaging, electrophysiology and clinical arrhythmia care. That combination allows us not only to develop new technology, but also to test it directly on clinically important problems.”
